Just came back from a scuba dive trip down to NC from VA. I noticed that my tanks had banged the hell out of the sub-woofer grill on the back door.

Is that a bad place to put the damn speaker, or what.

Mine had dents, gouges, and a couple of holes in it when I took it off. The projectiles never actually reached the speakers.

Is that woofer meant just for 'bass'? For the size of the thing, it sure doesn't seem to put out a whole lot of sound - or is it just that mine's busted? It sounds very 'muffled'.

Its a subwoofer (technically), and so is just for bass. It's not very good, as you have found out.

it is certainly better than disconnecting it. i did that on my '94 disco and it was horrible. the little 4" speakers have zip for base, so what comes from the rear subs certainly helps. toss a new pair of 5" polks (of your favorite brand) in there and that will help even more. but whatever you do i do not think disconnecting would be wise. i have all stock speakers in my '96 with a very nice eclipse head unit and my stereo sounds pretty damn good. it is banged to hell too, but never any problems. as you can see there is not much room for a sub in our trucks at all. you will have a hard time puncturing the speakers.......well unless you drive a screwdriver into them.

just an addition, I was actually going to replace those damn sub-woofers, with somthing that will fit in teh same space. Problem is there is nothing without cutting, so instead I got a high powered deck and took a 75 watt kenwood amp and put the power from the deck into the main speakers and the amp into the subs. Man what a difference, the thing WILL put out some bass, it just needs power. Great thing was, there were no holes, and everything still looks stock.

Just my .02

rob, do you still have the spare tire "disc"? if you do, take it off and leave the steel wheel exposed, that things rattles like mad with the bass. if you dont still have it I guess your stuck with a rattling door.:)

well thats not what's vibrating. it's the the metal on the back of the door. i guess i should mention i have a 200watt amp and the stock speakers, so it might be a little more than it can handle. but it sounds great... except for that vibration.

i thing i need to spray some of that expanding foam back there.
