Has anyone made their own rock sliders? It can't be that hard, can it? Anyone have any drawings to work from that I could use? If I got measurements from someone elses aftermarket sliders - would that be some type of copyright infringement?

Sure you can make your own...a welder, a few tools and a mechanical knack...thats how most all these parts started anyway...someboby made something in their garage...and no infringements. If you can do it, take pride in it.

Robert
Great! Have you kept track of your costs to date? Did you work from the original plastic sills, or are you copying a pre-built one? Have any drawings that I could use too?
Stephen

I made mine out of 70 x 70 square tube as well
there are a few twists and turns in the disco dody to follow as well as the curve under the door it curves in as well were the plastic is as you open the door mine is metal there
robert on the inside of your rail i used angle to fix it to the body as well in about four places
next time i would perhaps use 70 for width and 25 or 50 for height

How did you form the curves into it?

So any drawings as yet.

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of pageLink to this message   By Stephen on Saturday, July 28, 2001 - 10:18 am: Edit

... or even a crude drawing with some dimensions that you could post on the site here with some explanations would be helpful. I see another great post for the tech secton out of this: how to make your own rock slders.

Take a pad of paper, sit beside the truck and start making a sketch of that picture in your head. After about 5 tries and the sketch looks like what you envision, get a tape measurer and add dimensions to that sketch. Trying to figure out someone elses sketch will proberly be harder. What you have then is yours and you will like that feeling.

would it not be just as easy to take the old wimpy plastic ones to a good machinist and say....make these ugh....you can show them a pic the ultra cool rovertym ones and let em go at it....

How much is your time worth? I get at least $40.00 an hour, often more. So paying 6 bills for a real nice slider like Rover Tym's is well worth it. Now paying 3-4 bills for a simple skid plate is another story.

Stephen,

Send me an email and I'll send you a zip file containing few pics of my sliders.

Man , I am all for making some shit yourself but dont rip a guy off that blatantly. That aint cool. John himself posted in the thread to give you ideas of what to do. I agree with that. Then the mess you end up with is entirely your creation , you will love it no matter how it turns out.. :)

Hey - easy man easy. I'm just looking to learn from others mistakes so as to save myself from any suffering. I stated right off the bat that I didn't want to step on anyones toes or infringe anything. You're right - I do look forward to the satisfacton of saying - "I built that myself!"
I guess I'm just the type of guy who likes to have read all the instructions and have all the parts ready before I build the bar-b-que myself.

Yes Rob , you dig them eh? Stephen , I see what you mean and I understand. Its unavoidable to copy some things as they are just copies of others going all the way back to the first guy that made a slider for a Disco. But there are so many different things you can do with the main body of the slider to make it your own. Just have to "THink outside the box" so to speake :)

Check 1996 Dec issue of Popular Mechanics. "Stocking Stuffers for Land Rover Addicts".I had one but lost it when I built the first fire in my "Bar-b-que for Beginners" from the same issue.

"Buy Rovertym and save the headache.

Andy "

What headache? I use my gray matter all week and enjoy using my hands on the weekend. The dam things use about 60.00 in steel and would take less than a day to build.

"60.00 in steel and would take less than a day to build."

Ditt on on that Robert. Half the fun of making stuff on your own is to see it in action. Especially when it all works!!!!!

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of pageLink to this message   By Ricardo P. on Monday, July 30, 2001 - 10:52 am: Edit

I made my own. I did copy the ones from Rovertym.
Sorry John,I'm just trying to save some money so I can order your 2" srings, quiet cones, rear shock mounts, and the Rancho shocks.I wanted them before SOLAROS,but that's not going to happen.
Anyway, it is possible to make them.I didn't put the bend in them to follow the curve due to not having the patients.I cut the angle at the ends to follow the line of the wheel wells.I also put the step rale on them as requested by my wife. They came out nice.It took approx 15 hours to complete, including painting. The cost was appox $115.00.That is with paint and all hardware for mounting.I did all the cutting and my neighbor did the welding so labor was free.
If you have to pay someone for labor then you might want to just get the ones from Rovertym. They are a well made great looking poduct.
Sorry I dont have any drawings. We looked pictures and fitted pieces as we went.
I could post a picture, but it won't give you any more info than the rovertym web site.
If you want pretty sliders then it's easier to go with RT,if all you need is function the give it a try.

Damn Ricardo.
You ripped the guy's idea off and then you post it on board that you know he reads. That's cold.

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of pageLink to this message   By Ron on Monday, July 30, 2001 - 12:18 pm: Edit

How about pressure treated 2x4s. I bet if you look hard enough you can find some that are pre-bent to the right curve.

Hehehehehe

Damn. I knew I should have bought the suspension before mentioning it to you. Now the springs will be on indefinite back order.
After seing the Rovertym suspension in use,I'd gladly pay more if my wife would give me my wallet back.
