i was at a stop light when my 96 disco (68,000 miles) stalled and the check engine light came on. i thought i was in trouble but all i had to do was turn the key and it started back up with a little bit of the gas peddle. any hints to what might be wrong? i think it might be the fuel pump, but why the check engine light? please advise...

My bet is on the stepper motor, aka idle bypass valve. Check the Tech section for more info

Raise the base idle a bit and see if this helps. If so you may have a short term fix. Long term fix is going to be the stepper motor. Try cleaning it before you opt to replace.
best of luck...
