Our Disco won't start. The starter solenoid seems to click but the starter won't turn. Should I be looking at the starter/solenoid or could the trouble be the starter disable switch, or something else? Since it seems to be clicking (unless it's some other solenoid making the sound), I'd say it's the starter. Is it safe to "hotwire" these just for testing or will it mess up the security system or anything else?

Oh, yeah. It's an auto. One of the main reasons I prefer standards is that when this happens, you can always push-start a standard.

This pisses me off so much I'm thinking of ripping all the electronics out and simplifying the whole shebang. No more EFI, no more, "safety" features, no more "immobilizer" crap.

Thanks for any input you can provide.

It aint the electronics , its the starter. HAve some one give it a few light whacks with a hammer while you are trying to start. Be carefull where you are tapping on it. And yes , make sure its not the battery..

Thanks Kyle. I actually tried whacking it right off the bat. I have now confirmed that it is the starter. The main cable has the juice and when the key is turned, the solenoid clicks. Yet the starter does not turn. On a 96 it's much more fun than on the older models as there's the heat shield covering everything and you have to remove the O2 sensor and the driveshaft. All that for 2 bloody bolts on the starter.

The electronics will come out one day for sure anyway.

Thanks everyone.
