What are the symptoms of a bad stepper motor?

I ask because I am having stalling problems while traveling at 75 mph, while idleing, while accelerating, while fourwheeling in low range, etc. It will not usually restart for about 5 minutes.
They are becoming annoying as it has happened a few times while going through intersections.

Any advice is appreciated.

Cal

Doesn't sound like a stepper motor problem as this usually only operates at idle to compensate for starting and things like airconditioners. I think that once you are moving they aren't supposed to do anything and therefore remain closed. If they are jammed open etc then you should just get a fast idle speed and/or maybe a rough idle. They just let in more air and therefore raise the engine speed when needed. Check the inertia switch (in line with the fuel pump circuitry) as mine caused the engine to cut out a bit. I just worked the switch up & down a few times and never had a problem since. Also check the wiring and connections (including the earth) to the fuel pump. Maybe the fuel pump is faulty??????????????? Good luck!

Thanks Steve, that makes sense. I just ordered an OBD-II cable so I can get the check engine light code.

We don't have such things down here in Australia as the OBD-11, but I have heard about them, hopefully that will help confirm your problem(s). All the same I wouldn't mind hearing about the final verdict.
