I just finished this major modification to my Disco, and was wondering if anybody has had any experience or problems with similar mods. Here was my procedure (95 Disco, yours might vary slightly):

1) Removed plastic cover panel
2) drilled 4 small holes
3) screwed brackets to cover panel
4) replaced cover panel (did NOT use Loctite - is this going to cause problems?)
5) installed Maglite
6) Checked for oil leaks
7) Took for a test drive - it rattles!
8) Went back and istalled rubber vibration-dampening washers (cut from one of those little rubber jar-openers) - rattles gone!

Total cost, under $20. (Choice of Maglite, $4.22 for clamps, $.25 for rubber jar-opener).
Feeling of having flashlight/tire thumper on hand - priceless!

My question is this - Do I need to upgrade my suspension or worry about driveline vibrations? Any input would be appreciated.

(Please don't anyone get in a tizzy, I'm just playing around);-)

nice job. what year is that disco? i have a '96 and don't have the clearance you do between the door and the seat mount. from the looks of it i think that is a '94-'95 disco. of course i am very likely to be wrong on this. but i know that i do not quite have the clearance. i would love to have my maglite mounted there rather than my map pocket. any other suggested areas for mounting?

Ideas, Ideas, Ideas....
Can any one see the lightbulb over my head...
I cannot wait to get home....

Hey, order a small LandRover deacal for that maglight.....you wouldn't want non-LandRover(S.U.V) owners to copy.....

Well, I want to use this idea for my Range Rover Classic.....but yeah, a Discoweb sticker could be used in place of a LandRover oval........

With a CD changer you can't put the light there, so I put mine on top of the back speakers in the Tailgate. It is good when I'm back there and also is aimable into the back area or out into my camping spot or whatever out the back of the truck (with tailgate open). :) Mike

i don't have a changer so putting it along the front facia of the chair stand is option of course. think that is what i will do. only thing that it will make it harder to get to my 'stash' behind the little removable door. used the option on top of sub on rear door for a fire extingisher.

i looked into putting one there on my 97

it doesn't fit like i want. i'd have to open the door to be able to unlatch it and get medieval on someone's ass. i just layed it in the tray on the door.

you've sparked my interest though. maybe i'll go check again.

Damn, if I wouild've purchased a LWB RangeRover, I could've installed a holder for my Lousiville Slugger instead of a maglight.....("Hey Bluegill is that a Glock").....Do you think I could get away with that in my SWB....the leg room in the from that point to the rear seat sucks......you know they consider that piece of sports security a weapon in some states....That's if you aint carrying any balls(hey, the ones you hit with your slugger)......

It's a 95 Discovery, no CD changer. I don't think it would be in the way of a changer if there was one, though. The cover panel is still removeable, I don't even have to take the light off of the clips to remove the panel. I keep my first aid kit under the seat, but it can be removed from the front, so I don't need to put the panel on and off.

With the door closed, the light clears the door pocket by about 1/4 inch, and the light can be removed while in motion. I can grab the front lens housing and just pull it straight out (towards the front of the vehicle).

You know, I kind of posted this as a joke (I have too much time on my hands here at the office), but seriously, this is a great little addition. It keeps a light handy, out of the way, and not rolling around. Now if only I can figure out what to do with that little cubby hole right over the ashtray!!!

i saw where somone on this site added some aux.light switches where the ashtray was. guessing that could be done for the coin tray too. looked pretty sweet. reminded me of the red mitsubishi jacky chan drove in cannonball run. with all those cool switches and stuff. 'kojak with kodak'.......'smokey ahead'. come to think of it my truck makes that high pitch whinning sound just like their car did!!!

I like mine accessable so if need be, I can use it as a club ...

maybe someday I'll post pictures of the assorted weaponry located strategically around my driver's seat :)

why is there so much damn room on the side of Tom's 95 seat base? the seat bases on both front seats of my 96 take up the whole width of available floor space irrespective of CD changer(which makes good room available for shovels, chains, first aid & survival kits, ammunition, etc under the seats)

I discovered that I had to mount the maglite in place, because if I just laid it down there next to the seat, it would roll out when I opened the door. Gotta love the self-draining nature of the floorboards.

Quick question: Where did you get the clamps from?

I currently use a large piece of heavy duty materiel with velcro at each end. Wrap this around the handle above the door (inside) with the maglite inside, and then fasten with the velcro. Holds it okay, but not as good as this.

Anyone with a CD player - the 3 D-Cell fits inside the compartment infront of the CD player on my 98 Disco.

I got them at Home Depot (do you have those over there?), but I'd imagine you could get them through MagLite corporate if you can't find them locally.

Maglites are supposedly waterproof, so you could potentially mount it on the roof. Makes a cool spotlight too.

Hey Blue,

Have you noticed?

A 22oz Estwing rockhammer fits perfectly just inside the front door of a Disco. Open your driver's door, and put the handle in at the bottom behind the base of the front seat... put the pick end facing towards the front of the vehicle. It's RIGHT there every time you are getting out of your Rover, but it's completely out of the way, and is captured in-place while the door is shut so it won't bounce around.

Neat, eh?

That's funny - I usually keep it in the back with the other tools, but when I'm camping or otherwise out in the field, it snugs right in there. That little cubby between the B-pillar base & front seat base is good for lots of other stuff too (like small rock samps). I prefer an Estwing blade end vs. pick end, but to each his own. I just used the faithfull Estwing yesterday to beat a steel bar into submission - made a nice mounting bracket for the Hella 500 Garrett sent me. Gotta love the square head on the rock hammers. (to everyone else: it's a Geologist thing, you wouldn't understand :))

Dad had a brick hammer when I was growing up that we used when we collected fossils. "My" mineralogy professor INSISTED that we ALL get a 22oz Estwing pick.... It was in Paleo that I learned that the flat ones were "soft-rock", i.e. best for seds., esp. shales. The picks are hard-rock, better when getting into ig/met, and the durable carbonates (dolostone-rich area here). Also learned that the ol' brick hammer is tempered differently, and not as safe... but hey, it's better than none, and if you're careful you're fine. (Note: that's in reference to the brick hammer, not the chisel-tipped rock hammer... which is safer).

Anyway, quickly I grew very fond of the pick... it's really good at levering out samples from joints that the wider blades can't quite get. Good for digging through shale bits too, w/ practice. But, MOST importantly!.... ever thought about just how useful that hammer would be w/ something after ya? Let me tell ya, it WILL kill a Rotty with one smack. (A friend had his w/ him on a summer job checking water meters, using it to lift the lids... Rotty came running up, was going to get him before he could have made it to the truck... Rotty didn't know what hit him.) Anyone who isn't armed w/ a gun is beyond foolish if they try to harrass someone that has one of those in their hands. Back in college, sometimes a girl might get caught in a bad way heading back from late-night lab work to the dorm... I've never heard of a geology major who had her pick w/ her getting into one iota of trouble.

We used to spend hours out in the quad in front of the building throwing the things. Both tossing and catching them, pitching for distance, and for accuracy we were using them like a throwing ax... don't think the campus cops were happy when they figured out what was destroying the wooden sign there.... Ahh.... those were the days....
