This is a good one. When (96 Disco) I start the Disco idle shoots up to 2000 rpm then goes down to 750 rpm, start driving and when I come to a stop the idle stays high and then eventually goes down, also if on the highway in D at 2000 rpm and let off the gas it starts to slow down, when rpms get to 1250 it shoots up to 1500.
Anyone have a solution to this problem?
thanks in advance

I had the same problem on my 98. However it was fixed under warranty. I think its an "Idler" problem..not sure about cost .
Sorry that I can't help more...but just take comfort knowing that your not the only one.

Sounds like a bad TPS.

Take it out and stick a multi meter on it and see if it has a regular sweep.

one more symptom;if auto is stopped in gear at normal idle when I release brake and start rolling it picks up speed without touching the gas pedal rpm goes up to 1100 could this be TPS?
At the moment my alternator is bad, having it replaced tomorrow do you think it is throwing everything off ? Altenator went bad once before and very strange things go on when not charging
properly.
thanks again,Nick

Sounds like a bad "speed sensor".

Nick, on higher-torque vehicles with automatic transmissions, when you release the brake pedal in gear, the vehicle starts to roll and gain some speed. It's not unusual for my truck to "coast" at 1000 rpm. Speed sensor has nothing to do with that.
