Anyone know the angles at which a stock Disco will roll a)traverse angle b) decent angle c)incline angle?
Thanks

I don't know, but it gets damn scary past 30 degrees(AB lev-o-gauge) going up/down hill. The highest that I got it to was 33 degrees(with all tires on the ground) going down a really steep decent. I have the stock suspension with the sway-bars still on.

For stock Rangie Classics and Disco 1s traverse angle is supposedly 45 degrees & 40 degrees for D90s. Good luck getting to that. I had my lifted Disco to 40 degrees one time and my nerve about gave out. As a point of reference, the side tilt on the off-road track at most LR centers is 37.5 degrees.
Incline angle is 45 degrees for all the LR trucks listed above. I ASSuMe the decent angle would be the same.

Thanks Troy..Your right ..I'd probably shit myself before I willingly went to those angles!

the steepest LR Centre track is 36 degrees, most are around 34-35 degrees. LRNA says up to 38 degress, but that is conservative, ive seen the far side of 39+ and I needed new seat covers.

Those numbers are just a guideline, other factors come into play as well. How fast are you moving, what kind of surface are you on, is the Disco lifted, how much weight are you carrying, and how is it distributed, do you have anything on your roof rack, etc, etc, etc.
By Ron on Wednesday, August 01, 2001 - 06:27 am: Edit |
I have seen 40 on the side and I never want to see it again. Luckily my weight was on the high side. Alyssa could touch the ground from the drivers seat. Now if in doubt I plan tie off the roof rack with a tow strap. I have been on downhill that were well beyond 45 without too much of an issue. That is less scary when you get used to it

BTW it won't actually roll in a static situation until about 50-55% or so and then you usually just slide down, its the bump you hit that gets ya.

Just curious - I wonder how many people on the board have been involved in a roll? I have once - when we were stupid teenagers - that first suspension lift and bigger tires - Only took us 2 days after the mod to destroy the truck. Luckily no one was hurt. It was nothing real challenging at all we were doing, just going too fast, turning too sharply, etc. I've also known friends who've had just plain structural failure in the wrong place at the wrong time ...

(No, I wasn't driving, but it very well could have been me that did it too)

I rolled a stock F150 during a rare snowstorm just outside Tucson (and higher in elevation). It was due to ~25mph impact with bedrock wall while at extreme side angle (ditch on side of road). What a short strange trip that was...

is that Bigfoot in the background? another rare Yetti sighting!

Ooouucchh! What happened in that one?
Another interesting observation - I hear a lot (and have experienced) "It's the little things that can get ya", and, "Sometimes when you least expect it ..."
Hope no one was hurt bad.
>What a short strange trip that was...<
Blue, I think I know what you mean - It was a long time ago, but I still remember vividly the sensation of it being in slow motion, yet it happened pretty quickly. Hope to never feel that again! (or the sensation of looking at your destroyed vehicle immediately after! no fun.)

Most are just flops and not rolls. Rolls are no fun but flops arent that bad , depending on the terrain and if there is a cliff on the wrong side.. I have flopped a few when I was young but never went over in anything. Trying to keep that stat the way it is..

We went all the way over and a half - ended upside down - 4 of us in the front seat of pick up truck. The antifreeze (?I think, can't remember exactly) fluid was running down the cracked up windsheild - really scared the crap out of our little friends who witnessed our smooth move. I also remember while we were kind of hanging there (with the motor still running, of course) my sister's boyfriend, who was a GOOFY surfer, (not to offend anyone, note emphasis on "goofy") saying, (in a singsong way) "Whoa, dude, roll over Beethoven!"
I do not want to think about my my son learning to drive. Daughter was bad enough (she thought my old 4x4 was a battering ram).

> I bet its still running.
Yeah - it was. We had him turn it off when gas started flowing out of the carb overflow.
Simply winched him upright and away he went, no worries. Probably couldn't do that in a Disco...

The D2 manual specs state that the engine should run for 45 minutes fine at an up-hill incline of 45 degrees, without overheating. Quite why it should overheat isn't clear to me.

I would imagine that the coolant is not fully engulfing the rad when your at a 45 degree angle, therefore allowing the water temp to slowly rise.
Just my 2 cents.
