Why is it so hard to put the diff in 4 low?? And why is it impossible to put in "lock" position??

I take it from another post that you got your 98 disco a couple of months ago.. Could be that who ever had it before you never used it. It gets really stiff if it isn't used often. Just play around with it every couple of days and it should loosen up. If not then have the linkage cleaned and greased up. Then use it.. The more you use it the better. Also, don't lock it and then drive it on the street or any hard surfaces where one wheel on the axle can't do a little slipping.

I had some difficulty getting mine into both low range and diff-lock at first, but read the manual - the tips there help! I found the drawing to be very confusing (I'm an idiot) but after reading a few posts here - voila!

The recommendation; shift into N from D while stopped gave me no result, however try starting the vehicle forward in D (presumably in high range, at 1 - 5 mph in a parking lot, etc.) then pop it into N and try the low range while coasting. For some reason, with all the gears spinning it seems to help.

After you get those gears turning the first time, you should be able to do this from a standstill - although a nudge forward or in reverse will make the shift easier sometimes.

If you bought it used, or have never driven it off-road before - chances are the low-range and diff-lock haven't been used.

For diff-lock, I also used the rolling technique the first time. Worked like a charm. Don't drive it around the neighborhood in diff-lock though, it's really meant for only loose surfaces! Once you succeed, be sure to push the lever back to the right side.

Good luck, let us know if you need further help.

Erik

Thanks guys...I'll tell you if it helps..
P.S..the warranty is about to expire. Should I just take it in and get some new parts for free?

There are a few fixes that LR dealers do off the bat if you bring in a vehicle they don't have records for. They're known as recall items (not like flip-over-on-the-freeway-cause-the-tires-gave-out-"Oh-***t!" kind of recall - but nice fixes just the same. It doesn't hurt to go meet the local dealer at least once anyway. Then at least you know their name when they try to ****w you!
