Question for all.
I recently purchased a '97 disco w/ 33,000 miles,
auto transmission. When it's cold the transmission does not want to shift out of first until it hits about 4500rpm. The dealer said it's normal. Does this happen to anyone else?

Brian,
usually first gear shifts at 1500 give or take depending on throttle.
It is designed (too low IMHO) that way.
On to your problem.
I don't believe 4500rpm upshifts are normal.
I personally don't have much faith in the technical abilities of most LR dealers to diagnose problems.
I can't offer any concrete advise other than to try changing your fluid and filter. Has it had the 30k service?
Juice boxes depend on clean juice to work.
I think most tranny problems are due to contaminates and heat.
Sorry I didn't really answer your question, but now you have some more info.

Unless you really stomp the loud pedal, you should be out of 1st within almost seems like a few feet of moving off. Check the dipstick. Auto trannys warn of poor or tired lube with late or harsh shifts. Your truck may not have been properly serviced

This is a normal thing, I have a 97 Disco and the transmission shifts out of first at higher RPM's when cold. I also have a BMW that does the same thing and according to the manual, it's suppose to increase oil flow and help bring the tranny up to operating temp quicker.
Like Clint said, it probably wouldn't hurt to change the tranny fluid and filter, at 33,000 miles it should be changed if it already hasn't ben done. If the truck has been dealer maintained, your dealer can look up the service records and let you know when and if the tranny oil has been changed.
God luck and enjoy your truck...............

Some utter crap here...4500rpm upshift from 1st...under wide open throttle when hot......MAYBE. Have someone who knows what they are talking about check out the tranny including downshift cable adjustment..and change the fluid anyway...driving at 4500rpm when cold is also a good way of throwing a con-rod by the way.

Yes , the disco should not wait that long before shifting when cold. This does however depend on how hard you are on the stupid pedal. Are you taking off under part throttle or are you hammering the poor thing??

Its "Idiot Pedal" not "Stupid Pedal" a stupid pedal would be one of those polished aluminium with neon trim jobs. Also they are right 4500 is way too high unless you are driving like Mike (Schumacher) (sp).

You use allot of "Stupid pedal" to get you through the sticks Ron? Hmmmmm....

The problem is with AT governor(centrifugal pressure regulator), because it sticking in cold and old(thick) oil.
1.Change AT oil without filter and drive 1 day;
2.change oil second time and filter too and add
to fluid red "Lubegard" automatic transmission protectant.

One possible cause yes , but could also be the Throttle valve sticking when cold. Both of these items stick due to burrs in the bore though , not thick fluid...

I'm not jamming on the throtle like a mad man or
anything. This is very slow acceleration when cold. I just had it at the dealer about three weeks ago for through transmission service. An extreme would be about 4500rpm. It seems it needs about slow driving for about a half a mile or so at around 2500-3000rpm until it shifts out of first. After that it shifts fine around 1800rpm after a full stop. Would this be normal??

Doesnt seem lke it to me. I have driven quite a few Discos and none displayed the symptoms that you describe. You may want to back off of the TV cable a little and see if that changes things at all.

How would I go about adjusting the TV cable? Is this something I could do considering I'm not too Knowledgeable when it comes to engines.

Well , you should probably go to the dealer or a trans shop and ask them to back it off a little.

THis is from ashcroft's page
Q. I have a 4spd ZF and it sticks in first gear in the morning or when cold and is reluctant to change up from 1st gear. Once the gearbox has warmed up it shifts normally. Why?
A. The governor valve is sticking, can be caused by contamination, i.e. clutch plates disintegrating or bu using low grade oil, which can lacquer up the surface. The solution is to remove and clean the governor, remove the sump and examine for debris, if the clutches are disintegrating there will be a lot of black debris, in which case the gearbox will need a full rebuild.

If anyone cares to read all my trans.spec. at the end of tranny tune up all may be revealed?Never slacken off or faff about with kickdown cables if you dont know what youre doing.Ill dig out the settings and post them later.okay, with throttle at idle position k.d.cable should be just slack. From here to full throttle the cable should extend 39 millimetres. At kickdown the reading will be 43.5 to51.5 millimetres.

Thank You Clint
My disco is now at the dealer. The service manager came back to me with the same response, which he said he got from Land Rover of North America. He told me the governor will be rebuilt.
Now I have to get in touch with him about those clutches. That is now my main concern. Little disappointed with Land Rover as my disco was delivered to me in this condition. What happened to the so called "Test Drives" they are supposed to do?!?

"Test drives" are the same as those "passed a comprehensive 120 point inspection"....utter cobblers...you are lucky these days if the dealers even wash the cars they have for sale.
