Gas tank got close to empty today, and the fuel light came on. After about 20 miles, i pulled into Texaco and filled up. Put the cap back on and pulled away. No more than 2 minutes went by and my Check Engine light came on. (GRRRRRRR). No obvious symptoms, but the light is on. I pulled over and double checked that the cap was on tightly, and was able to turn it few more times. ( i had heard if its not on all the way the lack of pressure will cause the light to come on??) any ideas?

The only way to reset the MIL on a OBD2 vehicle is with a scan tool.

More than likely the light was caused by the gas tank cap not being tightened all the way. Turn it until it clicks a few times. If this is the case the light will go out in a few days. I think it takes 30 (not sure, but quite a few) warmup/cooldown cycles. Give it some time before you pay someone to reset your code. OTOH if you are in the Chicago area I can reset it for you if you want to drive by my house.

If it happens to be a D2, it could very well be because the cap wasn't screwed on well enough after the fill. I can't tell you the technical reasons, but this happened to me a couple of times. The Service Manager asked if we had made sure the cap was screwed on past "three clicks". On the next fill up, I made sure it was and the light didn't come back on. Obviously, this isn't the only cause for the light, but it can be a really cheap fix.

If it was caused by the gas cap not being tight, it will. Mine did, anyway.

Hey Duh....

It will turn off eventually if it was the gas cap.
Mine did - DII
