I read this ad on www.lrx.com. This guy in Hawaii is selling a 2000 Defender 110. How does he get this 110 in the country and register it leagly?

Easy, he can't. So he is doing one of four things:

1. Car is an old 109, and he is rebuilding on top of it to 2000 Defender specs. (a few folks in the country are making a business at this).

2. He is bringing it in as a kit and assembling the pieces and then "calling" it something else.

3. He is bringing it in under exception and is driving it less than the requisite 500-1000 miles a year or whatever the limit is now.

4. It's patently illegal.

I have only seen ONE person legally bring in a non-conforming defender and register it 100% legally. It cost a small fortune to do, and took over 8 months. Doing it legally today would cost upwards of $15k and that doesn't include buying the car.

Good luck,

It could also be that he got one custom made from some company in CA. I forgot the name, but they build/restore Defenders and Series trucks.

Wouldn't that constitute what I said in #1 or #2? Since frames, panels, etc aren't made here, that company would have to bring them in as pieces and assemble them. Or did you misunderstand what I wrote?

And thanks for the welcome to the DiscoWeb. I've been here in the past but just started posting this week. Nice place.
