This may vary from state to state, but I am wondering if it is illegal to just have a straight pipe after the cats. I had the stock cat back system disconnected while doing some work this weekend and loved the sound. It was surprisingly smooth and not to loud (my opinion, here, others will vary, but that is not what I would like this thread to be about). Was thinking of doing just a pipe and no mufflers instead of going with flowmaster when my stock stuff goes bye bye.

It seems quieter than some of the rice burners with those big tin cans that I see, so I don't think it would violate noise laws.

Any thoughts?

Hey Tom,

I would think you would be fine, as long as you didn't exceed what ever noise regulations your state/town has in force. I know of no law that requires a muffler, just emissions related equipment like catalytic converters, and that it meet noise regulations for your area...

You're right Tom - it sounds sweeeeeet unmuffled! But is there any possibility that you'd affect engine performance?

Running without a muffler is generally locally legislated so you'll have to deal with the sheriff or the city police. As for slowing down engine performance, yes, this is a possibility. It can be mitigated to a large degree by using a quality muffler. I have a Flowmaster 50 series on my truck and its nice. Were I to do it again, I'd use a Dynomax muffler which has a more mellow, deeper sound Each is available for under $75 and welding it on shouldn't be more $30.
