Finally did it tonight, inverted the tire carrier on the back door then drilled the two bolt hole for the top and the third one on bottom. The 255-85-16 BFG MT clear fine. I know the weight on the door is bad but will have to do until I can afford Safety devices roof rack. Looks great! Now if I can only hurry John up at Rovertym I can have all five tires mounted! Don't worry I am not driving around with one bfg and 4 stockers! Work is only half a mile away, post some pics tommorrow night.

I am interested to see what the life span of these DIIs is going to be with those "cool" ass tires. I am pretty sure we will see them start to fail. It was a good thing that LR put some bigger wheel wells in the disco but its a bad thing in respect to breakage. THe ETC system is already a pretty violent system with the small tires in place. Now I see droves of people slapping on the big meats and doing nothing else to ease the pain on the poor Disco . I have seen plenty of posts in the past from Disco 1 owners trying to fit big meats easily on their trucks. It will be interesting now to see what happens when thats made easy...

Well I had to start somewhere, I guess everyone else just dumps 10 grand in their vehicle at once but for me it will take time. I probably will need to get hd axles etc.

what's stock on a DII? 255/65 or thereabouts? I don't see upsizing to 255/85 as any dramatic change that will cause Herk's DII to spontaneously combust....

I thought the 255 was a 33 ? Thats a good drive train breaking size on trucks that dont have any ETC..

What's the largest size tire that you can safely fit to the stock rim of a 95 disco? I looking at Rovertym's 2" lift or Safarigard's Stage II kit. Any opinions on the two lifts or what size tire you would run? I live in Colorado and drive up in the mountains about 12-15 hours a week in various terrain.

Thanks,
James

Go with Rovertym's 2" lift package($1175) and some 245/75-16 size tires. If you want more clearence(and less power) go for some 235/85-16. Safari Gard sucks. Their products have proven unreliable for on-road use. Rovertym builds some tough products and everybody on this board loves them.

Kev,

By my calcs,

280/70/16 is 31.5, and
255/85/16 is 33.0.

Hey Kyle,

By my calcs, the stock tire on my DII is just a hair over 29" and I don't think I'd want to go much above that, even with a lift; maybe up to 30", if there is such a thing. At the moment I'll stay with my stock Michelins since they probably have another 18-24 mos. left on them.

But you got me worried about the big tire issue. Again, I'm not planning on ever going much over stock size, but what kind of failures are you anticipating and is it something associated only with the larger tires?

Thanks,

Kent

I inverted it and redrilled the holes on the bracket for the studs, I put the 2 studs up top and the single one back on bottom. Then I welded the studs back in place after moving them up about half an inch, take pics tonite. MattG

Well Kent , the bigger you go the more probable breakage becomes when you are running the stock driveline. You can upgrade these items and be in pretty good shape . Keep in mind tho that upgraded axles and diffs become less and less of an upgrade as you increase the size of the tire. The CV joints (Rons favorite topic) are pretty vulnerable , more so if you dont treat them well.
