Will this size fit a stock height D1 with AR steel wheels(4.25" off-set)?

I have no experience with this tire/wheel combo, but I am very interested in the answer. It seems that the 215/85/16 is roughly the same width as the 245/75/16--because of the width, trimming might be required. However, I don't have my owners manual handy to reference the stock offset; that might change my orignal thought and the need to trim might not be there. Looking forward to other resonses...DougC

I have 215/85 on stock RR wheels (which are the same size and backspacing as the stock D1 wheels). Other than that I can't help you.

Hello,

I have run the 215/85 16 (BFG Trac Edge) tires on my disco both with and without a 1.25" Spacer. My Truck does have an old Man Emu 2" suspension, however I experienced no rubbing either with or without the spacers when flexing the truck out, nor have I had any need to reduce it's turning rdius with steering stop adjustments. I've been told by others in the past that the 215/85 can be run on a stock Disco with no rubbing, and from my experience would tend to believe this is so. Hope this is of some help to you (Though probably not, just another of my "Silly Shit" postings I suppose..)

I have the 215/85R16 Dunlop RT's on stock wheels with an OME MD (1.5 ~ 2") lift. I had to do a little trimming as the rears did catch when stuffed. Pics are in my photo gallery.

i read on another posting that this size is about the same size at the camel trophy discos. the ct cars had slightly uprated suspensions - very little lift, more towards stiffer springs....

Sounds like the best thing for me to do is go have Discount Tires test fit the 215/85 on the stock rims and see if they fit without a lift. That would be fantastic. Of course, if they don't fit...I want to lift the truck anyway. Thanks to all for the help on this issue...DougC

Doug, they will fit, no problem, but you may have to do a few things. First you may need to adjust the bumpstops, so you will lose a little of your turning radius. Second you need to watch for rubbing and trim before doing any damage. With the 215/85 you might have to trim the front endcaps and just a smidgeon of the rear quarter panel. Go to tech section, follow the wheels and tires link, and at the top are a couple of articles that will help with bumpstop adjustment and trimming. I loved the 215/85 Trac Edges. Those skinny tires go a long way

Great. The tech section is what led me to think I would have to trim the fenders originally. Thanks again for the assistance...Doug

What happens to power and odometer and other things? Possible Dremel´ing no problem, wider turning radius no good, but if it also involves new gears...
Never thought I would feel like fitting something bigger than stock for my use, but after plowing mud and scraping the diffhouse armory this summer, I've been looking for something bigger - though not smth wide.
215/85 should raise vehicle by ~8-9mm (?) which doesn't sound like much, but then: I've only been thinking reflecting on this for a few weeks, so maybe this will give an edge on an otherwise pretty stock Disco?
Thanks!

Frode, some say the odometer becomes more accurate as the stock (U.S.) set up overeads the odometer by a few %. Of course you will lose a bit of power but that small change will hardly be noticeable unless you regularly tow, load heavy, and climb steep hills. Going taller to 235/85 might require new gears depending on taste and disposable income. The turning radius may or may not be affected depending on your current adjustment. And yes, you are only gaining around 10mm in clearance but more agressive tires will help too.

By the way, great website. Feel free to drop or link some of those tech articles here as they might see more use that way.

i checked the yokohama website and the 215-85's are 19mm taller in radius than stock.

215-85 o/a diamter is 30.6"
235-70 o/a is 29.1'

difference is 1.5" o/a = 38.1mm divide by 2 = 19mm or .75"

moe are you running 215-85's with no lift?

"moe are you running 215-85's with no lift?"

Yes, I did for some time and after the lift they stayed until I could afford 235/85 tires.

Thanks for the exact measurements. Keep in mind they will vary slighty according to tire brand

Moe!
Thanks for those kind words - I do that job to help others get easier through my struggles; if I got some trouble, others have also that trouble. I suggest relevant articles can be linked from the tech section. Crosslinking this way builds a powerful database.

215/85s:
Been checking different brands, and it doesn't seem to be a very popular size. That IS a drawback.

Thanks!

frode-

not sure if you have access to a set up like our 'tirerack.com' - but if memory serves me right - there are 39 choices in that size here in the states.

steve
