What do I need to do to grease my U-joints and half shaft. I know with the u-joints, just keep on pumping until clean stuff starts coming out, but what do I do about the half shafts? Are they special Land Rover fittings? What type of grease does everyone use?

YOu need to put the grease gun on the zerk fittings and pump! The old grease will come oozing out, and then you'll know you have a full charge. And no, the fittings are not LR specific. They are basic 1/4" fittings.

I use Mobil 1 EP grease because its good and easy for ME to get. You should use any good grease you are comfortable with. I tend to like synthetics because they work better.

Am I supposed to see oozing grease from the half shafts as well?

JArrod!
Chk out the internet landroverclub article on this:
http://www.landroverclub.net//Club/HTML/Maintenance_greasing.htm

Think its called NLGI-2 grease. Any good grease should do. I use Molybdensulfide (MoS2) grease.

As to half shafts: answer is "no". You're only greasing the UJs.

Hope this helps!

I think Jarrod might be confusing some terms here. Sounds like he is really talking about the slip yoke on the driveshafts, which has a grease nipple on it. Halfshafts are not greasable, as they are encased in the front and rear axle housings. Halfshafts and axels are really the same thing. There is one running from each wheel to the diff, hence the term halfshaft....

I think Jarrod meant propellor or prop shafts. When I bought the Haynes manual, I was totally confused trying to decifer the English terms for cars: bonnet, halfshaft, prop shaft, etc.

Whoops, your right Axel, I was talking about the slip yoke on the driveshaft and not the halfshaft, and all this time....

Since this is my first time around with this u-joint stuff, it got to be a really messy job(I owned a compact front wheel drive car before so I've never had to deal with this halfshaft, driveshaft, up-your-shaft stuff) :)

Seriously though, when I was pumping stuff through, on one of the u-joints the grease only oozed out of two of the caps instead of them all, does that mean that it needs to be replaced?
