This may be common knowledge, but I figured it out myself and thought I would share. It is the most satisfying thing I have done to my Disco.

I am 6'5" and had a need for a little extra leg room, so I started trying to figure out how I could move the seat back a little. I thought I might have to drill some new mounting holes in the frame or floorboard, but when I started looking under the seat I discovered factory pre-drilled holes that allow you to move the whole sliding mechanism back about 1 inch. This may not sound like a lot, but it made a HUGE difference to me.

I liked it so much, I moved the passenger side back too, and there is still plenty of room in the rear. One word of caution though - be carefull when you remove the rails, those springs pack a punch, and if they pop out it could hurt.

Oh yeah - you will need a size 45 torx driver.

Is your a Disco 1 or 2? the seat rails on the floorboard or the seat itself?

Disco 1 ('95) and the rails on the seat

Hey Marc,
I see the hole and cant wait for that extra room but how did you fit your torx driver in there? My torx set is like an allen wrench set ..I think. and cant immagine it fitting in there.

Mike,

I took the whole seat out on the first one - unbolted it from the floorboard (the bolt goes right through the floorboard to the outside bottom of the truck). Once out, I flipped it over and it was easier to get an idea of what I was doing.

On the passenger side, I decided this wasn't necessary, since I already had a good idea how it worked. To be honest, I think you might do better taking the whole seat out.

Enjoy the room you - will never regret this little mod.

Marc,

One of the advertised *improvements* in the '96 Disco was about 1 inch more rear seat travel. It was a big deal to me at 6'4", and easily noticed from '95's I had driven. Now it looks like it wasn't that big of a mod for the factory.

Congrats on this find. I'll bet it will come in hand when I search out a RR Classic...

Re:Seat travel on RRC-there's no 'extra' holes..
for the seat to 'remount' to. You will find more leg room than you know what to do with a LWB; front and rear is enormous.
The rear entry/exit on a SWB however is a poor
design for those rear (unlucky) passengers. Try it-that's why I ONLY sought a LWB this past winter. BTW,I'm 6-3" ; the LWB cabin doesn't need more leg room !!

Excuse me for being new, but what is a RRC, LWB and a SWB?

RRC = Range Rover Classic (body style )
SWB = short wheel base
LWB = long wheel base

RR's came out in short first and then about 94 or so (someone correct me) a long wheel base version with a limousine feeling back seat!

93 was the first year for the LWB

That clears it up for me. Thanks.

So it sounds like there isn't a mod for moving the driver seat back for Disco IIs, just Disco Is.

I really want to get a Discovery but just can't justify it with the bad seating position.

Anybody heard of drilling new mounting holes or the like?

Eric - I think the jury is still out on the D2's - no one has checked yet from what I can tell (the LWB, SWB and RRC are all Range Rovers - not Discos).

Thanks Marc -

If anyone happens to hear about such a seat mod for a Disco II please let me know.

Marc, on your D1 were the extra holes on the seat rail where it bolted to the seat? or on the base were it bolted to the floor?
