The cruise control on my '97 Discovery doesn't work. I already checked every vac. hose that I could find. The red LED light comes on when I press the dash button, but nothing happens when I press any of the steering wheel buttons.

Please tell me I don't have to replace some $400 computer, cause I would rather do without.

Like you said, you already checked the hose but check it one more time..

When mine does it (yeah, more then once) the hose splits right where it connects to the nipple.. on my 94 the cruise control hoses are all on the driver side on top near the fire wall.. they are black and about as thick as surgical rubber tubing stuff..

let us know..

If I remember correctly I saw only 2 hoses. One was coming through the firewall to the (what ever it is) in the engine compartment, the other went from that thing to another (what ever) in the very front of the truck directly behind the driver's headlight. That thing behind the headlight had another plastic tube coming off of it, but this was not blocked off nor did it have a hose attached. SHOULD IT??

I suppose I will try to replace all the hoses this weekend (the 2 that I know of anyway).

Where does that one go, after it goes into the cab through the firewall??

Will my truck run OK if I take the hoses off, and go to the auto supply to ensure that I get the correct lengths??

Ben,
I had a leak in a hose that I couldn't find for a little while also. It ended up being at one of the connectors.
Once I cut the split section off and reattached it, it promptly split again...worse this time. I re-trimmed it and bought some small hose clamps and put them around the hoses at the connectors...voila, no more split hoses. (and it's lasted a lot longer than just trimming the hose)
Hope that helps,
Daniel

Check the vaccum switch on the brake pedal. It can pop out of it's holder or the hose can pull off. If you have a clutch... there is a second switch there to check also.

Yep, works like a charm (so far) and I am not as worried about running out of hose from constantly trimming the split ends...

OK, so what if I replace all hoses and check all plugs, and I still got nuthin? Then is it the $400 computer?

I haven't looked into it yet, but just want to know about EVERYTHING I need to check (that lil ole me can fix) when I do dive under the hood this weekend.

For me,it aint the plugs or the connectors but rather the actual pump mechanism. I think its about 175 to replace, assuming you do it yourself. Someone (Ron, I think) suggested that theoretically the pump "leak" can be patched. Who knows....

All the componets for cruise control: Cruise control unit:under dash, engagement(on/off switch)dash panel, cruise control switch:steering wheel, rotary coupler:steering wheel, vacuum pump:box section under jack, brake/vent switch:brake pedal, vehicle speed sensor:transfer box behind transmission brake, neutral lock out relay:behind RH lower "A" post trim casing and actuator:RH engine compartment. Lots of possibilities and lots to check.

I had the same problem on my 96. I took the fuse off and replaced it... it was not burned.... I just replaced it and it fixed the problem. Later on, I found out another Disco owner did the same thing and it also fixed the problem. Try, it will only cost you a few cents.
