Now that my Disco is almost out the door, I'd like to keep costs down a bit-

Should I get another disco, County LWB, SWB?

Opinions ? Facts ?

the LWB has a 4.2L, but a longer wheelbase and more rear overhang.

SWB and disco are almost identical except for the body and some interior parts.

SWB and LWB tailgate/liftgate rust.

why is the disco out the door and you are planning to get another? do you plan to wheel the rover?

you're on the disco list, what do you think the answer will be?

disco list ?

yes, i'll be wheeling the range rover.

it's out the door because i got $25k for it (1996 SD) - kind of a no brainer. maybe another disco is in line. The problem is, if i buy another disco, it won't be as NEAR as nice as mine is now...

Andy,

That's a tough question. My mechanic lent me one of there 93 LWB county's yesterday. My only other experience with a Rangie was with a ragged out 91 so I wasn't impressed with them until now... But I've got to say I'm quite impressed by the 93 that I took home yesterday. I would have sworn that it was wider, and it seems like there is way more room up front than the Disco. I got out the tape measure and the width is almost exactly the same as the Disco inside. But it seems much quieter and more comfortable than my 97 SE. The extra room between the front and rear seats is nice also.

I've been looking for the last couple of days and have found several 93+LWB's for around $10K that I could live with. As far as off road goes the rear overhang sucks a bit but the extra room would be nice.

I also love the fact that the sunroof has a real shade. That seems to really reduce the sun fatigue after driving it all day. Let me know what you decide I'm seriously thinking about selling my 97 LSE with 88K and buying a $10K LWB. I'd have about $5K more to spend on the offroad mods:) And you don't have to either scrunch down or look at the reflection in your hood to see when the traffic light changes;)

Andy Does that guy want to buy anymore 96's for 25k. I can't blame you for selling it. Hell I love mine that my wife won't drive because if she would wreck she could not hide from me.Iwould throw her out Kyle's window. But 25k SOLD

I had an '89 SWB for about two years before the D2. It had plenty of "issues", but was an overall excellent ride. We did a 5000 mile vacation in it and I never felt uncomfortable, even after a 12 hour day behind the wheel. Only went off road once, and not too tough at that, but it did the job it was designed to do. I do think the ride is a little different than our Disco. On the downside, Classics were not manufactured at the apex of Land Rover's quality curve. Even with a well maintained unit, you should expect to be spending some bucks on keeping it on the road, or off. That is what finally caused us to make the move. I was faced with spending almost as much keeping it running as payments would be on a new Disco. I know a few other Classic owners, and while not all of them are monthly visitors to the mechanic, all of them have had their fare share of problems. OK, so this may be preaching to the choir. If you look at the other side of the coin, a Classic, once its kitted out, makes a very formidable looking rig, not to mention that it can certainly hold it's own on the trail. Differing opinions accepted.

Actually not so, the overhang is the same as a SWB. The extra nine inches shows up in the rear passenger compartment. On a SWB, rear ingress/egress is a little cramped so this is where the extra room helps.

The newer ones have the 4.0 or 4.6 with the new body style. These are nicer and stronger engines than the 3.9. Someday I hope to install a 4.6 in mine. The suspension is the same in both vehicles. I prefer the LT230 over the BW for more gearing choices. They both have slop in them and clunk is similar in both auto boexes. I've never seen a post 90 RR with a manual tranny yet.

Guess it depends on your personal taste. Email me if you have more questions.

Having both an 88 RR and copiloting the Disco I would say there is no real appreciable difference between them. Make the decision based on style. Only thing I can say is 93-95 you got rear ETC on the RR and the LWB is really long (its basically a 110, not that is a bad thing :) )

One benefit (and maybe detriment) to the RR is the roof. On a disco when you start leaning through tight sections that have trees or cliffs you may smack the high roof on something. With a RR, it is lower so you have more room to get by.

However, with a Disco, I love that big opening for hauling stuff. I get some tall shit in my truck that I don't think any other SUV could possibly fit thanks to the opening and height in the Disco. The rear sunroof also has come in handy when buying tall plants and bushes. Just stuck them out the top and drove home!

Ali has compared his RR (3.9) with my 97 Disco (4.0) and said I have more power, so that is also something to consider.

If you do a lot of tight trails, you may want the SWB over the LWB. There are some things that I do with the Disco that I don't think a LWB would make it through simply because of the length. However, the opposite probably applies as well.

Also, the Disco is just not that comfortable in my opinion. The seats make you sit funny, so on long trips your body gets fatigued. I recently rented a Buick Century for a week and could drive 5 hours in that thing w/it's comfy seats and be rearing to go while in the disco I felt pooped. Odd.

One thing I am curious about: The RR's have vicous couplings, does this mean that is not as good as a CDL? I am assuming that they work like a detroit locker, which would mean they are fine?
