Hello all,

Just bought a 1998 Discovery LE. Needs new tires. At the risk of upsetting a few you, most driving is around town, some freeway driving, not a whole lot of off-roading. It has the original 235/70 R 16s on it right now, but will need to be replaced in the next month or so. Any recommendations on brand, and size (if another is better) would be greatly appreciated. Have bought from Tirerack.com before so if anybody has had good luck with anything from them what was it?

Thanks in advance,

Kit

Kit if you are planning to retain stock suspension, go for the BFG AT tires in 235/70. Tough to beat on or off road.
For a little more aggressive off road (and slight loss of on road handling) BFG trac edge 225/75 16
The Stock Michelins are a super on road tire and pretty good off road until half worn when they start to struggle off road. I kept these as my street tire after much consideration

BTW if you've worn out your tires your shocks are long gone too. Bilsteins are a great replacement

I'm running 225/75 Dunlop Rover R/Ts and they work very well both on and off the road. They are also sold by tirerack.com That's where I got mine from.

Does anybody have any experience with new Michelin cross terrain tires?

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of pageLink to this message   By Ho Chung (Ho) on Saturday, August 18, 2001 - 04:44 am: Edit

i ordered a set of those michelins to replace the tires in my wife's minivan.
i'll post on my findings.

do the cross terrains come in 235/70-16?
if so, those would be great tires for road biased driving, even for the occasional off road.

hey all -

ho - just checked the tirerack site and the xterrains do come in 235-70, but also 245-70 and 255-65-16's.

anyone of these sizes should fit ok, the two bigger sizes will most likely require steering stop adjustments.

after making myself almost crazy with tire sizes -at this moment i am leaning towards a 245-70 in the pirelli scorpion at and a set of biltsteins with a 10mm lift.... though like the weather this might change at anytime!!

245/70-16 BFGoodrich All-Terrain KO is a good tire. A little bigger than stock. Kinda' pricy though.

but kit here doens't need any taller tire.
he just want good value tires for the road.
:)
in that case, i vouch for michelins in stock size.

...another stock rolling diameter (29.1") in a great value for the buck is the general grabber st in 255-65-16. tire rack have them on sale for $56ea. (someone else have dunlop grandtreks in the same size for about the same price but ccan't remember who?) true the michelins are a nicer tire but 2.5x more each one. he could replace all five for the cost of two michelins.... the generals are 'h' rated and oe on the m-class cars. however i do not have any personal experience with these tires - but the guy at the tirerack swears by them, and the brits seem to like them aswell. (now if only the scorpion st 255-65 was on sale for $60......)

a comment on the general grabber ST...
all it grabs is nails from the road. :)
i've repaired those minivan tire (same size 255/65-16) more than once per tire. it's eating up my safety seal plugs like nobody elses business.

perhaps different tires attract nails more than others?

and i think life of the driver and passangers are worth more than whatever you save by going with some cheap ass tires.

probably it's a mind over matter thing.... if you don't mind, it dont' matter.

:)

ho - that is too funny! i've never heard a comment on the grabbers - but that is a good one! i'm glad some one spoke up on these.

i guess it all goes back to my microeconomics class at smc in 1982 - when the teacher mr buchwald marched in and promptly wrote TANSTAFL on the board in big block letters and asked if anyone knew what this was. he then explained "there ain't no such thing as a free lunch!"

i guess you get what you pay for!

If most of your driving will take place on asphalt I recommend Pirellis Scorpion A/T. I purchased them from tirerack.com thinking I'd not take my Disco off-road as much as I do. I had to do it over again, I would get BF M/T... Now, I realize I take my Disco off-road more (way more) than what I originally planed. Good Luck!

I put the Xterrains on my 98 disco, Sears had a sale.....much quieter then the 4X4....I do alot of highway time so less tire noise is a big plus for me. Now, if only I could get rid of that tranfer case whine it would be perfect!
I wanted 255/65 16 Pirelli's but they want big $$ for them, plus I had Pirellis P-zero's on my car and they wore very fast.
I would recommend TireRack, I've purchased a few wheels/tires thru them and was satisfied.

my dad has them on his J**p. this *car* is not taken off road at all, but snow and rain. so far they seem to work better than any stock Goodyear crap they put on these things. use to run Bridgestone Duelers on his car as well. they seem to work the same in the snow and all that. pretty quiet and all that.
i have to recommend a tire that i recently have purchased and really like so far. the Cooper Discoverer S/T. GREAT ride, quiet and a decent tread design.....beefier than Pirelli and Bridgestones and a better tire i feel as well. is pre-drilled for studs as well. new this year.....and very well priced. i had 5 tires installed here in town for about $550. it's also great for holding good size stones in the tread and chucking them at high velocity speeds into small cars behind me. oh the joy!!!

I thought the stock Michelins were a bit noisy if most of your driving was highway and malls. Does anyone have the Pirelli scorpions on their trucks and how quiet are they.
