I own a 95 disco, I had the serpentine belt replaced recently and it was routed wrong. It ran for about 1 and 1/2 months before the trouble started. The tachometer stopped working and then the truck died. We determined the belt was over the alternator wrong and the shop that changed the belt replaced it and I had to get a new battery, all seems well with everything except that the tach still does not work, I have a feeling the alternator is fried, would the tach not working be an indication of a bad alternator? I am taking the truck to the shop tomorrow but wanted some expert advice to see if you routed the belt wrong could this fry the alternator? And does the aternator work in conjuction with the tachometer. Thanks

also make sure the wire that runs the tach from the alt. is connected. should be a small white wire that runs from the top and back of the alt. to through the firewall.

have you checked to amps being put out by the alt. if the belt is on right and your amps are low then it sounds like your alt is a goner. you can get yours rebuilt at a local shop. that or you can buy a rebuilt as well. i have a rebuilt with a MM core and Bosch guts for about $250 at a local foreign car parts shop. but first check to make sure your amps on your alt are low. also make sure all the grounds are tight on the alt and to the battery as well. get all the small stuff taken care of before you start replacing stuff. the problem is not going to be with the tach though. most likely it sounds like a new alt. sure you will get some more good input on this on monday.....that or do a search for past posts.

I found rebuilt Disco Alternators at www.rockauto.com for $190 + $100 core charge. Had Rotors for $55 also.

I had my D1 Alternator replaced last summer with some hard-core, high output alternator and it has been working well since. The original battery died in April and I replaced it with the Optima Red Top.

The alternator is a retro-fit to my D1 but it's got enough power and the connectors for a welder!

Perhaps Trevor from TMS can detail the work - since he did the install for me.

As a totally off-topic but related bit....

(Don't ask how I discovered this, BTW...)

If you're driving along and the tach starts to "sing" with whatever RPM you're running at after doing some wheelin', before you cut off the engine check to see that your negative battery cable hasn't flipped off the post....
