Does anyone out there change their own tranny fluid and filter? I messed with mine today, dropping the crossmember and then the tranny pan, only to find out I would have to drop the exhaust system to remove the tranny pan. You can not replace the tranny filter w/o taking the pan off. Is this true? Or am I missing something?

You aren't missing anything. Changing the tranny filter is a good excuse to fit new gaskets to the y-pipe, and change o2 sensors.
Good luck.

The local Jiffy Lube Manager told me that they have some machine that will suck out all the old fluid and replace the exact amount automatically. Some sort of a sensor attached to the fill spout I guess. He claims that I would not have to replace the filter at all because supposedly the cleaner does a good job of cleaning the filter.
Has anyone heard of this? Had this done? How accurate is the claim?
It would sure beat droping the X member and the Y pipe.
TIA

Depending onthe mileage you are just wasting your time anyway. Its a screen and on a low mileage truck , rarely needs to be changed. 9 times out of ten if it has allot of crap in it you have other issues..

Kyle:
When would you recommend dropping the trans pan to check the screen / filter? I have 32K on mine and have been contemplating this for a while now.

only 32k? - that baby is brand spankin new! I changed mine @60k-odd, if I remember correctly (as part of 60k service plan, I believe)

Yep , 60k before I would even take a peek. Then again at 120......

FWIW
LR recommends the filter be changed at 30K, and not at all thereafter.
ZF recommends the filter be changed every 30K.
I changed mine at 30K and plan to do it again next summer (should be at 80-90K by then)
YMMV

WEll , I belive in frequent fluid changes and I have dropped far too many pans and replaced far too many clean screens. AS I was saying before , if its got clutch in it you have issues anyway that a change aint gonna help. The other shit either gets sucked in or will drain out with a change...Car makers used to want to change it at 30-60-90 intervals. Some reps used to tell us to never service the bastard... go figure..

You'll get no argument from me here. Preventive maintenance is great and all, but this job is way too much of a PITA for _me_ to want to take it on every year. Draining the fluid every year I can handle.
Again, _YMMV_ I was just repeating the LR and ZF recommended intervals. Far be it from me to tell others to ignore them.

lol , your sarcasm is duely noted.. You will notice that they want the full "Service". if you drain and fill more often it kinda negates the need for the screen change. What do you think that screen is gonna hold on to? lol

That dime I dropped in the dipstick tube last time I changed the ATF.

Dude I was joking. I think it will fit though, so don't have any change in your smoke poket while you're refilling it

Here's a stupid question:
where is the dip-stick in a Discovery 1? Is it on the engine oil(orange) thing? If it is, mine probably fell off.
By ////////////////// on Monday, August 20, 2001 - 03:37 pm: Edit |
in your case, I think the dipstick is in the driver's seat.

...of course, if you're talking R-380, change and change often !
It's sort of a PITA too...but you're wallet will thank you in the long run.

I agree with Kyle. At 40K I replaced my screen and tore-open the old one and it was very clean.
That was a lot of work for a simple filter.
I don't expect to replace the filter again until 90K or more.
