I have a 2000 D2 with a factory brush guard. I'm looking for info on where to mount some sort of recovery point up front. Everything I've read says don't trust the guard for recovery. Any info on the use of shackles or JATE rings with the brush guard installed? Pictures would be helpful.

I am planning to buy some 3/4 inch #8 bolts and some 1/4" steel plates and make my own jate rings. They go in the hole right next to the tie-down loops (which are only used for flat-bed towing). I will do this this week and show some photos.

ps I heard that the defender jate rings fit, but you better make sure.

Dean,
How did your rings come out? I'm also thinking about making my own. I look forward to seeing what you have done on Sep 8th.
..also did I hear you were putting in a snorkle this weekend?

Carl,
Have not done the jates yet - maybe this week sometime. The snorkel was very easy to install and looks great! Took 4 hours though.

Dean,
I wonder about the 1/4 inch steel you are using for your jates. I think the plate might bend, do you have a welder? A welded srip of 1/4 plate would greatly strengthen the ring.

Each jate ring will be 2 bolts 3/4" diameter, one through the frame holes. Then a pair of steel plates each with two 3/4" holes, and the last bolt through the other ends spaced with some steel piping. I want to maximize the everlap of the frame sides and the plates to stop warping of the frame on sideways pulls.

Does anyone know if the steel angle bars and flats such as the ones they sell in Home Depot are strong steel or brittle-as-crap cast iron?

strong steel or brittle-as-crap cast iron
They are mild steel and perfectly ok for what you are doing with them. I would use 1/2x2in stock though, not like you could get that at home depot but . . .

Skip Home Depot. Look under the yellow pages for Steel or Metal. I'd be surprised if you didn't find 1/2 dozen outlets that sell almost any kind of metal by the foot (or inch for that matter).
Then you get exactly what you want.
Plus they will probably charge you next to nothing to have it cut to size.

NO disrespect meant to Home Depot, its just that they are mostly into the Home repair business. for steel - go to a steel store
