Maybe I should read my manual (yeah, yeah, I'm getting around to it), but what is your wisdom about proper engine break-in on a new vehicle? I'm adhering to "stay slow for 1000 miles" and thinking an oil change at the 1000 mark is a good thing. I live in a rural area so very little stopping-and-going, with a mixed bag of mph and terrain. Stop laughing, I KNOW I'm obsessing, LOL!

On another tangent entirely, I was told there have never been any fatalities in Land Rovers in North America. Anyone ever heard that?

Thanks for any wisdom....

Karen :)

Karen,

Do read the manual. And the run-in period is pretty important, particularly as far as the cam is concerned. Change the oil at 1000 for sure and again at 3000. If you can afford it, I'd switch to synthetic oil at 6000 and never look back.

I know of several who have been killed in Land Rovers in NA. Very famous football player was killed in a 1993 RRC about 2 years ago. Head on collision. Pictures on CNN. They said an airbag might have saved him.

Perrone,
when you mention pictures on CNN, what are you talking about...

and isn't this B.B. more interesting than our former home over @ R's N? When I check back in over there its sorta boring compared to this site.....Getting my Disco next month...When are you getting yours?

Perrone, thanks, I'll get right to reading that Owner's Manual. Time to get stop playing and get serious.

So much for that "no fatalities" business, eh? Oh well, that tale came from the same guy who claimed to be doing "100 mph on unpaved African roads for 10 hours a day", I asked about on another thread. Gotta love a good Rover legend, though the truth will probably keep you safer in the end. Thanks for the input.

You need to follow the proper cam break in. The first 30 minutes of an engines life are the most important. DO NOT let it idle for the first 30 minutes of life. You need to hold the RPMs at 1500 to 2000. There are printable instructions on all the major cam mfgs web pages.

accorind to road and track article 'open road magazine' fall 98 issue - e. morrisey formerly of land rover uk for 20 years "dirve the living piss out of them...especially during break-in period" apparently hard driving makes them the smoothest and most responsive - espcially the v8's. being an all aluminum motor this could be true, if ever get a new rover - this is what i will do, even though it goes against all that i have heard of breaking in a motor!!!

i drove mine 'hard' but not harsh on the last long road trip (800 miles) and when i got back - the car is smoother and happier - but i already have 36k miles.

94 Rover,

There was a NFL player somewhere near Minnesota or something a couple of years ago that had a terrible wreck in his 1993 RR. They had pictures of the accident scene on CNN and I remember reading about the story on Yahoo news as it was called back then. Really a sad sight. I wish I could remember the guy's name, but I'm not much on football.

I thought I was going to be getting my Disco in February or March when tax returns are in season. But my GF (who would be the principle driver) test drove one and HATED it. It was the airbag steering wheel that she really disliked. She also felt it was too "tippy" for her tastes even with the swaybars and stock tires. And yes the shocks were fine. I wanted it versus anything else because I already have all the tools and such to work on another LR.

She was smitten by the Xterra but can't afford one. So it looks like we will have a older Trooper or a Montero instead. And it won't be a mall cruiser. She want's 33s, a roof rack, and other gear! She's a mountain biker and wants to use the truck to drive in to the cool riding places!

AHahahahah...

No man... my GF is actually REALLY cool

She like to wheel, but is happy to navigate, looked at the stock Xterra, and said "You're right, it's too low. It needs 33s"! Cooks like crazy, doesn't mind getting muddy, tells me to go to Hooters and to bring her some wings or a chicken sandwich on my way home. Watches Speedvision with me, HATES the WNBA and says they play like "midgets". Reminds me when my WWF show is on, watches it with me, and then gets into arguments at work when other people get the details of matches wrong!

No.. as they say on the Fosters commercial "She's a keeper"!
