I have a U.S. spec '95 Disco V8i. I have posted here last spring with the same problem. I lose power at approx. 2200 rpm at about 62mph while going up a hill. I can always reproduce the problem on a certain section of highway. I have a manual transmission. If I down shift manually or cause the vehicle to shift the power restores.

The loss is more of a hesitation but on a few occassions it really bogs down. It has done this for the last two years at this time of year. It seems to go away in the winter and summer except for a slightly rough idle. My vehicle now has 74000 miles.

I have replaced and checked: plugs; wires; dist. cap and button; vacum advance unit (it was already broke); good timing; good compression; good air gap; good fuel pressure, good thottle position sensor; good engine temp sensor; did appear to have one bad O2 sensor, replaced; had engine motor vac'd; had ignition checked while driving and under load; changed air and fuel filters, etc... I have not checked valves as my mechanic and I believe that the problem would not occur as it does.

I have never had an error code. I notice that the plugs, when this occurs, soot very quickly as if running rich. My theory is that the mixture is too rich causing it to hesitate and as I open the throtle and downshift, the air increases to match the fuel. I do not notice a decrease in my fuel mileage so I don't believe it is rich all the time.

The only sensor I haven't checked is the mass air flow. I don't know if it can be checked or how.

While I can live with this problem for two months a year, it is bugging me that I can't find the reason. Any suggestions, can a dealer check the mass air flow or other sensor for problems that may not trigger a code? Is there anything I am missing? Except for this, and this is relatively minor, the truck has been trouble free and a complete pleasure.

Joseph,

I have a 97 Disco SE with an auto transmission. I use to have a power cutout problem at hwy speeds. At hwy speeds, the engine will suddenly cut out and come back on a few moments laters. Turned out to be a faulty vehicle speed sensor. You might want to check the VSS.

Joseph,
It sounds like the airflow sensor to me. I had a 94 Disco with similar symptons. I could at times simply turn the ignition key off without pushing in the clutch and then turn it back on and it would reset. The very competant mechanics at Landrover Sahara in Las Vegas told me that was the most likely problem. Unfortunatly they're expensive, $525.00 from Brittish parts ltd. or close to $700.00 at the dealer and you have to swap it out to see if it corrects the problem. And you can't return the part if thats not it.

I try to remember the good things like how good they 4 wheel.

Jay R,
I have a '95, and I had the same problem as you. It, in fact, was the speed sensor.

Where is the speed sensor located. Just curious. Can anybody replace this by themselves. Thx

Ray,
I took it to the dealer. Originally, I thought it was the fuel pump. I was pleasantly surprised to find out it was "only" the speed sensor. I saved over $300.00 bones on that one.
The dealer replaced it for me, so I do not know exactly where it is located...sorry.
