Hi there everyone...I have a 96 Disco SE, and have come across a problem I hope to solve before my first trip off the pavement.

My transfer case shift lever (4H-4HLock-4L-4LLock) will not move from the 4H (unlocked diff) position.

I had the shop lube the piss out of the differential area, and still cannot get the truck to shift into 4L or lock the diff. My repair guy told me there's a rod broken in the lever area, but I am a little dubious...can anyone suggest causes for this, and possible solutions?

I can offer a cause but, not a solution as I have never fixed on or taken one apart.. Cause was most likely that who ever had it before you never used it so it gets stuck. Also, when you try to put it into 4 low are you doing it while you are standing still or are you rolling a little bit (under 8mph) while in neutral? Rolling a little makes it much easier to do. However, if you do a search on this topic in the archives you will find other post about it that tell you how to go about looking at and fixing the problem. I remember this being covered before on a different post.

Andrew,

When I run into this problem, this is what seems to work on mine. Keep the truck in neutral and try and shift transfer case in low ... if it won't shift, apply the brake, put the transmission in drive and back in neutral immediately without moving ... and see if the transfer case shifts into low. I used to run into this problem quite a bit because the previous owner never shifted the transfer case but this always seems to work for me. Can't explain why ...

Murray
