Im looking for a decent off road/on road tire
I need good in the snow, as well off road and on road.

You may want to look at Dunlop Rover RT's you can install studs on them. It is a cross between AT's & MT's
What I have heard they are great tire on and off road. Tirerack.com has a survey on all the tires they sell RT' have a very good rating in everything.
Getting mine after I get my order from RT

Joshua I have the Dunlop Radial Rover RT and they are a very good tyre In the winter they will work better than a mud terain and also on the road and also in the rain as far as off road they work better on the rocks due to more rubber in contact with the surface and in the Mud they have never let me down when compared to mild MT tyres but buy no means will this tyre preform like a super swamper . one last thing this is the best all around tyre for the 4 season one set of tyre on and off roader.
Just my opinion

I checked out the Rover RT, and I am interested as well. I have a stock 98 Discovery, and was wondering which size to go with 215/85R16 or 225/75R16. I kind of like the 215 for better snow and mud. Would both these tires fit with standard springs?

I have AT's and they last a very long time, and are great in all situations except mud. One of the best all around tires you can buy, as proven by sales figures. slightly more expensive, but worth it.

Mike, I'm running 225/75 Dunlop R/Ts on my stock 98. No problems and I didn't need to trim anything. I really like them to.

also the BFG Trac-Edges are really good, cheap too. i ran 245/75's w/stock springs and barely caught the rear panel.

215/85 seems awfully narrow, I'm all for tall and skinny. It is not a size I have seen before any input?

215/85 are almost identical in size to the 7-16 tires on the old Camel Trophy truck. It's not an uncommon size, just uncommon in the US where everyone runs to big fat tires.
In the world before everyone was running lockers, suspension lifts, rock guards, and Super Swamper tires, open difs and tall skinny tires were the rule off road. They are still worth looking at.

Before I changed over from stock tyres I ran a snow tyre in the winter and the recomended size was 225/75-16

Thank you all for your advice. I will have to give them some serious thought.

are the dunlop r/t's noisy on the highway,I am getting new tires for stock 96 ,can't take those noisy michelins anymore.

I think my R/T's are less noisy than the stock XPC's with the exception of wet highway (?) for some reason - only place I've heard them to be louder.
