Hello, is there any one in the Los Angeles area that has free time tomorrow morning. I foolishly went offroading yesterday, late afternoon. In the process, my '94 Disco got stuck in the swamp. Even though I have OME spring and nitro shocks that give me a 2" lift, the mud/wet sand is knee deep.

I had to leave my baby there 'cause there was no one around and it was getting dark fast.

I can pay for your service. Please help me if you are free tomorrow morning.

Best regards...

Javier

Ho,

It's stuck in Azusa canyon. Where the river ends and the 'lake' begins... (let's hope the Jeepers are kind to my truck if they get there before I do :) Call me if you have a chance, I lost your number since the time we spoke in '99.

Hope you get sorted soon. I can't help cos I'm in the UK. If it's any consolation, I got mine stuck too. Before I'd even paid the owner for it.

I drove around as hilly farmers field as the snow was melting and made the mistake of stopping at the bottom of a hill between me and the gate out of the field...... I dug in up to the axles and a bit further. Have you ever tried to push one?

After 2 hours with a spade in the pouring rain in the middle of the night and being turned down for assistance by 3 garages, one recovery firm came out to me with a Bedford 4x4 truck and still couldn't help me. I abandoned the £12,000 Disco in the field and got towed out the following morning by a kind Defender with a winch.

If only my difflock knob hadn't been seized I may have stood a chance in the first place.. I lived and learned.

Good luck anyway.

Ah, the perils of being adventurous! or silly. I should have followed my first instinct before heading down that seemingly easy sandy path.

Thanks for the story, Anthony. I see everything turned out OK for you, I'm confident it'll turn out OK for me as well.

Hey, maybe others can share their stories of being knee-deep in mud/sand/snow and what they did to get out.

In the mean time, I have one offer to help from a 4x4 Toyota Tacoma. He has BFG MTs, better choice of tire than I made. Although, I never intended to get this stuck.

I'm only worried that he's not going to be able to pull me out, it's slippery mud or marshy sand all around me. Don't ask how I got in there, I just made a foolish decision.

If anyone else is interested in helping out a fellow Disco owner, I'm still by the phone, for at least another hour or so. It's 6:45am in LA.

Cheers!

Javier, next time don't go by your self. Have some one else with a 4x4 go with you to. Two other 4x4 trucks would be best as some times one just isn't enough and you have to tie the two trucks together to get the third stuck one out. Good luck. I would offer help but, since I'm in VA it would take a little too long for me to get out there. You would probably already be out and looking for another swamp to play in.

Javier,

I must've just missed your post last night. I would've helped you out if I'd known sooner...I got stuck there too the first weekend I had my disco. I went though some shallow mud and those little creek crossings...confidence builds and BAMN! Next thing you know you're stuck in some deep stinky a$$ mud. Lucky I went on a busy saturday and there were a lot of people there. About 20 people watched as I was knee deep in mud trying to access the "recovery" loop in the front. Had to shovel about 1.5' of mud. A huge skijacked F350 ended up pulling me out, and about 5 other people too that day.

If for some reason you can't get it pulled out give me a call at work and I'll see what I can do.

I'm very impressed as well. This is the type of things that we all hope to see in our everyday lives, but rarely do. I think we've all bought into the club mentality when we purchased our LR, and we all hope to see this type of stuff especially within our own Rovering community. So, extra kudos to Ho, John, Moe, and everyone else who was involved for making us look good.

Javier it looks like you asked the right bunch of people...now if I can just find some ppl like that here in Atlanta! Hmm...maybe I can get my Disco in time for the Solaros meet..:)

Javier wasn't stuck too badly. He was just driving near a river on a large wash, and the silty ground let his vehicle sink. I can see how he got stuck in that spot. The ground there looks solid, but when I walked on it, my shoes just sank into it. Just one tug from a winch fixed the problem. No biggie.

Thanks again to Javier for the great pastrami quesadilla. I got my fat fix for the day.

Thank you, thank you, thank you, Ho, John and Brian!

I am most appreciative that 1. they helped me out of the mud 2. I was a complete stranger 3. they did in on a moment's notice.

I am an avid spokeperson for discoweb and expeditionexchange.com and a new loyal customer.

By the way, sorry it took me a little while to respond, I took a nap after hardly sleeping last night.

Thanks to everyone for the well wishing as well. I hope to meet as many of you as possible at truck haven.

And the lunch guys, it was the least I could do for your help and kindness.

Cheers to all and buy your accessories from expeditionexchange.com!!!

Javier,

You're making a mountain out of a mole hill. It's not that big a deal. You were stuck and we were close by, so we decided to try to help out. That's all.

Try to make it to the Iron Chef Challenge @ Truckahaven in October. It's the weekend of October 13th. If you have any guns, bring those too.

cool pics Javier - now you're famous :)

see you at Truckhaven in October!

At the risk of too much "me-too-ing", I think it's wonderful and regrettably rare to see people swing into action the way Ho, John and Brian did. Even if the actual recovery wasn't that difficult, the time taken and the effort spent was incredibly kind. Great pics, too. Good show to all involved!

one funny feeling was: we were approaching the area, and all we could see was the rear of javier's disco pointing up. and i am thinking... damn.... my girly winch won't do....

but it wasn't as bad as the hummer stuck.

You guys are awesome. I wish I would have some guys around here I knew to call for help.

Got stick in the Uinta mountains in Utah. I was in so deep that I had to climb out the driver side window. I wasn't even planning to go offroading. But my eyes decieved me the trail looked well traveled and the next thing I knew I was stuck and kept sinking, dropping an another inch every ten minutes. A few of the guys I have talked to where I was stuck said that it was a mud hole but seemed to look solid when only traveled on by atv's. Luckily there Keith came along in his lifted F350 we attached the recovery rope and he pulled me out. I wish I had lockers and a winch. That will be my next investment after I get the exhaust manifold fixed.

I enjoy reading about all your journeys. Makes me wish I could get away from work more.

Jim

You guys are great. Pretty darn nice. That's what I meant when I have referenced "quicksand" in a California wash ... I know that sickly feeling when you think you're in bad trouble. Anyway, I think this rescue at such short notice was awesome. It really does restore my faith in mankind too, when there are so many vultures out there. What a great group of guys. Hope to meet up with you on the trails sometime soon.

Without a doubt, a winch and rear lockers: my next investments.

Here's a little ditty:

Stuck in sand, nearly up to my knees
run for the road, someone help me,
oh please, please, please

There's a good samaritan
from triple A
Should I help this poor soul?
Oh what the hey...

My wife just laughs,
glad you're not home late
and in one piece,
not on somebody's plate

Onto Discoweb,
to search for a hand
and the plea is answered
by a strangely named man

Ho is the name
and pardon the twang
My name is real
not south central slang

Ho, John and Brian
arrive shovels in hand
by 11am
I was out of the sand

And so my friends
I've experienced an epiphany
"You just bought a Disco?
You're in great company"

:)

See you all in truck haven (john, email me about the freestyles)

Javier
