I want to replace my Disco 1 LE windshield with a heated unit. I have seen this discussed here or on a related web site but can't get back to the info. Is this a exchange and plug-in to operate the new windshield? Isn't the necessary part of the vehicle wiring harness already there? Because of the complicated access to the wiring for the "automatic" rear view mirror, is the windshield replacement one of those 'dealer only' functions? Many thanks.

I had my front non-heated windshield broken by a rock and then replaced with the heated variety. All of the wiring was already in place. The only thing to do is hook up the windshield to the two plugs at the base. The trick is that the heated windscreen 'option' must be activated using the testbook and this will need to be done by the dealer. You will also have to buy the fascia switch for the heated windshield and install it in the appropriate spot.

Harley - My Disco has the wiring at the base of the windshield, but where does the switch go? Does it go by the CC switch? If so, do you have a LR p/n? Does an extra relay need to be plugged in anywhere?

Sorry for all the questions, but I've been trying to track down this info for awhile and you're the only person I've come across who has converted.

What Year is your Discovery Harley? My '96 does not appear to have the harness connectors at the base of the windscreen...

Whoa every one! - my dealer just sent me a note telling me that the heated windshield IS NOT available for the '98 Disco 1 - it wasn't an option until the '99 Disco-2 - therefore, I do not have the necessary electrical connecitons in my D-I to make the conversion. Very sad news. I still need a windshield and that's a 400 bill.

Dealer may not be 100% correct - my '97 has the connections at the base of the windshield - just no switch, etc.

Point of Order. Info from the dealer is that the window frame of a Disco I is smaller than the Disco II therefore a window from one will not fit into the frame of the other - at least this is what's coming out of the dealer service dept. Who knows - these are strange beasties at best and I'm only passing on what I'm getting from the horses mouth. A new regular windshield installed is about $600. sigh

Go for a plain ordinary autoglass company. In Norway they claim close to 50% of what LR takes for same thing. Think they said the equivalent of $700 but check in your country - Norway's renown for high prices...

Hey Tom,

From what I understand, the '97 and up Discos had the connecters. They are under he hood, at the base of the windshield cowl, in that area at the back of the engine compartment that is sealed off from the engine. My 1996 Disco does not have them, or I just can't find them.

The Disco II's windshield may very well be bigger, but my understanding was that their was a heated windshield option on the Disco I's, just not in this country. Someone mentioned that a Range Rover Windshield fit? And that you would use the heated version of this...

Its possible on the S1, the UK ES version had it fitted as standard equipment. the 96 LRNA catalog, even shows the switch for it sitting next to the CC. All we need is the pn...anyone?

I've got two two-wire connections on either side of my windshield base - both utilize heavy gauge wire (purple/white - I think). There are in plain sight once the hood is opened and are in the vent area directly below the windshield.

Not sure this helps but I received this from a Uk contact I think that vin might be in the pre 94 non airbag spec.

Tom, the two prongs you see at the base of the ws are for hooking up the heated ws. The ws itself has two little connectors that mount to these spots on the car. This definitely raises my suspicion that this is do-able. I guess a good question is where would the appropriate fascia switch be located and then pull the blank and see if there is any wiring back there. FWIW the wires at the prongs that you mentioned were purple on my rig (d2)......

Any progress with an actual installation of this animal in a D1?

After checking my '96 SD, I found that I do NOT have the connectors as desribed on Bill B.'s '97 SD. Further research revealed that there is also a timing delay relay/module absent from non-heated windscreen equipped models.

For clarification, I would consider Bill B.'s 97 as *Equiped*, while my 96 is *non-equipped* due to the absence of the WS connectors.

But that begs the question, "does Bill B.'s 97 have the timing delay relay/module?

Here is what I found in my RRO-List archives regarding heated windscreen timing delay:

Landrover do a timing relay for the Defender Heated windscreen which is part number PRC6796 it should cost around 40.00 GBP inc VAT. I can't find one listed for the Disco (though I suspect they would be similar).

It is the multi-function unit (MFU) that provides the timing function on later Discoveries, so (basically) an electronic unit.

Actually, checking again, that part number is used in Discoveries, where it is described as a
relay. It is also listed for RR Classics, where the description includes the word *timer*.

Bill B., do you have an ETM for the 97 MY that you can check to see if any components are insatlled, but not active (due to lack of heated WS)? I have the 96 MY ETM, so we could probably compare the diagrams/component listings.

Tom - sorry only electrical manual I've got available is earlier - not later. I haven't had the time (or inclination) yet to trace my windshield wiring to its termination point/relay sockets/etc - but it is on my "list" We should still plan on getting together in the near future to puzzle out a few of these things - two minds vs. one (though not sure that applies when it comes to modifying trucks - things always seem to get a little more out of hand then :-) )

I currently have a 95 disco with a busted windshield. I have full glass coverage through my insurance. They will replace it...no problem...I'm going to prep the truck with wiring and try to get the heated one...

any suggestions???
