Do you recommend Mobil 1, or something different.

Do a "Keyword Search" (to the left). I'd suggest searching for "synthetic oil" and let the fun begin. Some great (read: long) discussions about the virtues and vices of several brands.

Robert,

One of my rover friends is a oil scientist (I am sure it is called something fancy) anyway he gave me a long explanation of this and basically yes Mobil 1 is sort of the bottom end of synthetics, then again he freely admits that is what he uses due to availability so . . . whatever

I don't use mobile 1, but isn't that the oil that mercedes and AMG reccommend for their cars? Just a thought...

robert-

i used what the germans call the 'popo meter' which is your own butt. i first used mobil one - and that was in improvement in smoothness over std oils. then i switched to castrol and it was even smoother! also after 1000 mile hard run to az. the oil still looked clean! i found mobil one looked dirty very quickly.

so there is my scientific evidence "der popo meter" - so next time use castrol and see for yourself

Any chance it looked cleaner because Castrol Syntec has less detergents than Mobil 1? Perhaps Mobil 1 was cleaning out old sludge and varish deposits and the Castrol Syntec isn't cleaning anything? Now I'm not saying Mobil 1 is a premium synthetic, because it isn't, but neither is Castrol.

If you want a premium synthetic, look into the Amsoil, Royal Purple or Redline. But expect to pay $7-15 a quart for it. Mobil 1's old formulation was closer to Amsoil but they weren't selling much of it. So they changed (or so I've been told by someone who adopted it early). I've run Mobil 1 in the BMW for 6 years with great success. I intend to change to Rover over to Royal Purple oils in all lubricants within the next two months. Its expensive but the difference in wear will make it worth it for me. I changed to synthetic greases a long time ago and now see little bearing wear or u-joint problems.

Good luck to you,

-P

ya' know i was thinking the same to myself- but to be fair the first two changes with castol the oil was dirtier- i think it is now just cleaner inside. perhaps it is because there is supposedly graphite in mobil one that i just looks darker. i used mobil one in my audi that i used to autocross - and it always looked dirty in there too- and even the audi's ran nicer on castrol. again my perception -

Thanks for the tips on the Castrol. I think I'll try some my next oil change before I go to the Royal Purple. If it works good, I'll use it instead. Its a HELL of a lot cheaper!

I did notice that the Castrol Syntec comes in a blend and a full synthetic. Which are you guys using?
