Anybody have any first hand experience with swapping 4.0L engine controllers ?

What would happen if I tried to put a ECU from a autobox equipped truck into a 5 speed ? Is it true that all the boxes are the same except for the PROM's. Do you think I can just swap PROM's ? I've been told the ECU's are VIN specific, but I would assume all that's in the PROM set.

The PN for the ECU changed at least 3 times from MY96 through the end of MY97, according to my parts book and there are seperate PN's for manual box and autobox units, which makes sense.

Thoughts ??
