Ok guys,

What do you pay to get someone to set up your diffs. I'm looking for prices for ONE diff only here:

1. Detroit Locker
2. ARB locker
3. Tru-Trac

Since my truck is a daily driver, I am really looking for a price on a same-day install service, not a mail-in service.

The only way to get a realistic price, is for you to go out to a few shops in your area and ask what they charge. The other option is to call Great Basin, I think he sells third members already setup. I have no idea what he would charge.

The problem is that there isn't a shop within 3 hours drive that I trust either to do the work or to charge me fairly. I've got a price from the guy 3 hours away that I trust. I just want to know what other people are paying.

I can't do the GBR option as I stated in my original post because I need it installed so I can drive away.

The locals in Chicago area charge around $300 for labor if you bring in the 3rd member.

It's my understanding that GBR will ship you a third member built to your specs and after you swap it you send back your old core.

I see. Of course, shipping on a 50+ pound part to colorado and back, plus labor may not be any cheaper. So far I have seen prices posted here from $100 to $300. My quote was on the high side of these figures.

For TT or DT install including new gears will cost around $200 from GBR and he will likely pay the shipping to your door, and then you pick up the return shipping of about 65lbs There will be, of course, additional costs above the locker such as bearings and seals. With the third member swap from GBR you can be certain on correct install.

You can also do what I did. Moe is a friend of mine, so we had a bit of a query going. I parted everything out and opted to have the work done at a small differential shop. The guy has been doing diffs since he was 9. I had the opportunity to observe the installation and overlook his craftsmanship. I also had the benefit that he does all the work for ARB and their demo trucks. Overall, I have been satisfied with the install and the way the process has gone. It takes a bit longer than a 3rd member swap, but you end up saving about ~1000. As far as install, I hope to be out the door at 175 for each diff.

You can of course set up the diff youself as it's pretty straight forward. What you might need help with is the actual tooth contact pattern and backlash. This you can have a local diff guy check over for a min shop rate fee. Removing the 3rd member, old carrier, separating the Ring gear from the carrier, drilling holes in the case is something you can handle, Perrone. Don't you have all the tools now after all this time? I remember you were working on your tool inventory a half year back or so.

You guys are being VERY helpful, but are missing the point. If I HAD a local diff shop, I wouldn't be in this bind. The closest place to me to get a diff installed cheaply, is Tampa and that is 4 hours away. I have a source I trust that is closer but at $300+ per axle in labor alone, its a little steep.

I have all the tools except the dial gauge and press for the bearings. The press won't be here until the winter and I guess I could pick up a dial gauge. But without a good example to go by (excluding the multitude if pics I have seen on the net) I really don't want to do the first one alone in my garage! :)

What is the "point"? Your question was how much do you pay....Marty,Ali and Moe answered the question...and you have people within your driving area that have quoted you pricing...so...what is the point we are missing?

Perrone , I would charge you 4 easy. Most professional shops will cause they know that shit happens..In this case if shit happens it causes them some great pain to correct it. I wont install an ARB so I cant offer anything there..

I did my detroit and my arb (arb) was my first diff ever and it took a lot of time, I broke shit, etc etc etc... but it was worth it.. I learned a lot doing it.

detroit was very simple comparing it to the arb took me about 2 hours and it still clicking...

I used the install instructions from Minnesota Land Rover Club and that's it. I did everything they mentioned including the Dominoe's Pizza delivery! You're right about the press though. Really you won't need to mess with the dial indicator or Prussian blue (for checking contact pattern) if you just take the whole thing (3rd member)to someone. The first one was nerve wracking, having to drill a hole in my pumpkin was sort of anti-religious for me! Couple of HailMary's and off I went.

Thanks for the advice. I was reading the same installation instructions! As I mentioned at the top of the thread, I would remove it and take it to someone if they were local. It seems as though I am going to have to just pay the piper on the first one, and when I get the rest of the tools (dial indicator and torque wrench) I'll try to set up the front tru-trac myself.

P, Race-car buddy has Mustang Speed shop in Tampa. Both my front and rear TrueTracs will be installed, one-day, $500. That is me driving in and driving out.
I will purchase new Carrier bearings/oil/probably their lunch too, but I know it will be done right.
