Did anyone else see Maximum Exposure last Saturday? It showed a couple in some oldish looking truck (couldn't tell what make) bouncing all the way down the lion's back, from nearly the top. Did a fantastic job keeping it on the track, but alas right at the end it slipped off sideways and head first into the ground. The couple were hurt, but not killed. If anyone recorded it, maybe we could put the video on this site?

This reminds me - if anyone has done the lion, how did you come down? Braking / 1st gear, just 1st, or what?

Is it the one where there breaks went out on them?

I saw one a couple years ago where an old Bronco lost its breaks and just went flying down the "hill"

I saw that awhile ago, too. Didn't record it (and NO, it wasn't me. LOL) Definately 'WHITE KNUCKLE'. For some reason, I thought it was a Bronco too.

Funny, ... I was kind of replaying that footage of the above mentioned in my mind, and suddenly another thought/image got conjured up. I might as well tell, because my husband probably will anyway at some point (a few already know). ... When we first got the Disco 2, I was driving on the first day of 2 on our fisrt offroad excursion with it (in Anza Borrego). I was thrilled ... Of course, I wanted to test everything ASAP. We came upon a rather steep and slightly rutted incline, and I thought it'd be a great time to test the new hill descent control. I promptly proclaimed this, engaged the correct button, and took my feet off of all floor controls and down we went (a little fast I might add). I started to instantly gripe about how it didn't seem to work very well. Finally, my husband turned to me and said, "Uh, Kim, you did not have 4 low engaged ..."

Yes, a hard way to learn that it does not engage PERIOD, unless in 4low ... Guess I was too excited, didn't even notice that I didn't put it in 4low ... :)

The weird thing about that whole video was that they both walked away from that accident....and I'm not sure but I think that the brakes failed on that Blazer.
I saw it on Ripley's believe it or not about a year ago.

I did Lion's Back in April and I went down in low first gear with lots of braking action. On something like that, the speed of low first wasn't comfortable enough for me. I also stopped one time on the way down and got out to take a look where I was going and what line I should take.

It happens to everyone. When I tried to ascend Lion's Back, I first tried to do it in high unlock. I didn't even realize my transfer case settings because I was looking up Lion's Back and freaking out. Only when my truck didn't want to climb the first steep section did I realize my transfer case setting was off.

Then I thought to myself, "oh, I'm unlocked". Not even noticing that I was in high range, I locked the differential and tried again. Only when my vehicle still wouldn't climb, I realized I was in high range.

Lion's Back does that you.

I've done it on my mtn bike, but didn't want to take the old jeep up it. The bottom ramp is very steep, but doable. The hard part is overcoming the vertigo since you're sky-high on a fin. Haven't been back to Moab with the Disco yet. You better believe I'll be up & down that damn rock next time I'm there :)

So is the lion open any time, or do you need to book up or something? I heard there is a ranger nearby that opens in in good weather - is this true?

used to just be a rock, now it's an attraction. you have to pay the keeper of the attraction his five bucks or whatever he's charging nowadays. Maybe the rangers have stepped in and formalized everything now (escalator, handrail, and double yellow center lines to the top?) I haven't been there in a while...

Yeah, the first part of it is really steep but it's only like 15 or 20 ft. long. On the way down I had to stop and survey it because I couldn't see the steep part because my hood was blocking it. I just got out and picked my line and went down.

I had to pay $6 to do it. There is a woman in a tiny shack at the bottom, and you gotta pay to play. She's there not only to collect cash, but also to close Lion's Back when the weather is bad. First time I went there on the way to Hell's Revenge, the woman wouldn't let me do it because she thought it might rain while I was up there. Sure enough, it started pouring and hailing while we were on Hell's Revenge. But the skies cleared up just as quickly and after Hell's Revenge, the woman re-opened up Lion's Back.
