Hi,

I have a 97. Today, I had a hard time starting it. I would crank it, and I could hear it turning over, but it wouldn't fire up. After the third try, it started up, but only after holding the key in the starting position for about 10 seconds.

Drove a couple hundred feet, pulled over, switched it off, and tried again. Same problem.

Drove a few miles. Went to eat. Started up no problem.

Any ideas? Vaporlock?

How old is your fuel filter? Any missing or bucking on the freeway?

Don't know much about the vehicle. It has 59K miles, I bought it last year from a dealer, but the only thing I've done since is changed the oil.

There is some instances when I hit the gas, but it either bogs down or has a delay before kicking in.

If I need to replace the fuel filter, where is it located?

Thanks.

The fuel filter is in the right rear wheel well. It is the same filter a a GM car so any auto parts store will have it.

Does it only does this when cold? You may have a faulty coolant temp sender. The ECU can't tell the engine is cold and won't richen up the mixture, so you get poor running untill it's fully warmed up.

Today is the first time it has done this. I hope it's a fluke.

However, in the past sometimes turning the key to the start position does absolutely nothing. No turning over, no motor noises, nothing. Take the key out, try again, and she fires up.

Not sure if that's related or not.

I'll try and see tomorrow morning, when the engine is cold, if I get the same problem.

Could I be under attack by the infamous Lucas Electronics, aka "Prince of Darkness"?

Bad key switchs are VERY common in Disco's

The not starting at all problem - no click, no nothing is probably unrelated - it happens with 96-97's especially - GEMS doesn't talk to security system ECU sometimes and tell it that is OK to start.

Hopefully just your fuel filter - but could also be pump and/or pump connections. If filter doesn't do it - check the harness connector at the pump (pull inspection plate in cargo area floor to do this) and look for melted/burned connections - this happens and is possibly caused also by restricted fuel filter making the pump work too hard. Crappy harness connections then get too hot and melt.....

Here was my problem
- bad battery
- plugs got fouled out (Bosch platinum +4, put in the new Autolite Titanium Plugs. (starts and runs like a dream)
