For Disco II owners - what grade of gas is everyone using? They say it will run on anything but performance suffers. Will it negatively affect the vehicle over the long term?

Amoco mid-grade (silver)

Well, my Disco II has been to the service 3 times in the last three weeks. Twice for the “Service Engine Soon”, and once for a ticking sound. So the last time I asked the service rep, in a nice way, WTF. He said that the main reason they get LRs in with the light on is people using low-grade gas. Use nothing but premium was his suggestion.

BTW
I had been using premium, the reasons my light came on was valves the first time, oxygen sensor the second.

I think premium is BS, until you run into "ping". I've got a '95 Disco at high altitude, and an '00 Saab Aero, and neither needs high octane. You can always argue that the performance over cost is an issue, but I seem to get the same mileage, same performance, and the octane doesn't seem to matter, IMHO.
