Hi gang,
I want to mount a strong recovery loop on the frame, and spent a couple of hours looking for the right spot last week. My conclusion is to mount a ecovery shackle each side, through the frame about a foot back from the front wheel, where the frame is curving upward towards the engine.

If I drill a 3/4 (or even 1 inch) hole in the middle fo the frame there, is this going to be a big problem?

Please correct me if I'm wrong here, but isn't that too far back? In case you are stuck in mud (like the pic of the disco from the canada trip), you'll have a hard time reaching for the recovery point if it's way back there.

This is an interesting question. Who would you turn to to get a definitive answer to this question? All LR Techs are going to say No, because they have to for legal reasons. I'd guess that the companies that build the Trek Discos or modify Rovers for racing would be qualified to answer this question.

In my humble opinioin, I'd say No. I think the frame horns are very weak. Probably designed that way for crash reasons. Drilling an additional hole might totally screw up the front end crash dynamics.

Most vehicles we encounter simply mount the recovery points on their bullbars. They normally have recovery locations already setup, it makes the most sense, it's up the front, near the winch and always accessable in the mud.

Right, I was thinking I would attach a recovery rope before going through anything deep. When I called Rovers North they told me the military recovery loop they sell fix through the hole right next to the welded-on tie-down points, but these are even further back, and as far as I can see would require grinding these off. These are right near the middle of the car too.

Dean, is this for a D1 or D2?

The JATE military rings when used on a D1 can be mounted using exhisting frame holes on both sides of the frame rails. On the left/drivers side, remove the factory hook and use that hole. The front facia needs to be removed, but that's it.

As for the RN comment, the holes to use are IN FRONT of the tie-down/transit loops on the frame. Use the bottom of the two bolts that are used to mount the stock bumper.

Sounds like you're making this overly complicated.

Don't know about the D2.

I have a few thought about this that would require some metal shop fabrication. In the old day's I would drill a hole in a box frame in a second...but not with today's computer designed frames.
As I said I have a couple ideas that I can't seem to put in writing.
I look forward to sharing them with you at Pine Barrons...If they make sence, we can post them to the group for thoughts.

When you say 'where the bumper is attached' is this the same as where the wrap bar attaches, just in front of the crush cans?

I bought a couple of used Jate rings from a scrap yard. Used existing holes. Went in easy.

I'd say just go with the jate rings. Beats trying to "reinvent the wheel".

Rover Accessories wants $30 for used ones with new bolts and nuts.

They do not make different models for the different trucks. It's all the same part.
