anyone have experience with ashcroft gears being louder than stock?

On the contrary. I've had Ashcroft 4.11 R&P's on the 90 for almost 2 years. There is no whine as compared to stock.
If you are getting a lot of noise, check the backlash. You could have too much tip loading on the ring or pinion which will accellerate wear(and increase backlash), eventually grinding your teeth to nothing. Some prussian blue on the pinion teeth will tell you if they are loading properly.
