Everyone of us love our discos but am sure we all have little pet peeves about them. I'm really curious to find out the top ten. Mine are:

Rear door hinge made for RHD countries. It sucks to load/unload from the curb.

No remote gas filler cap. This is specially true in Jersey as all gas stations have full service.

No "Door Open" indicator/warning. This just plain sucks on a vehicle of this level.

Although despite of all these... I still love my disco!

No front recovery point of strength

I have a couple:
1.If I drive it over 20 miles, the Borla exhaust gets way to loud
2.My left front speaker works when it feels like it
3. My tranny(5-speed) sometimes doesn't want to go into reverse
4. A/C is really loud
5. Sun-roofs rattle a lot
6. "puting" sound in the engine when cold
...but I still love my Disco.

what cupholders?

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of pageLink to this message   By Steve (Steve2) on Thursday, August 30, 2001 - 11:23 am: Edit

the rear door is actually a plus in my parking garage - as i park up against a wall on the passanger side. if it opened the other way - i'd be in trouble getting stuff out of the back. a dual door would of been nicest. visibility is poor looking out the back. but i have found that on most cars if you line the top of the spare tire to the bottom the car behind you winshield - that's about right for parallel parking.

the seat tweaks my back at times.

no remote fuel door release- but this has been fixed ont he sII's

low front windscreen - fixed on sII

internal rear view mirror blocks my vision of cars on the right in a 4way stop - very dangerous. i have to peer under it to see, just in case. the mirror can hide pedestrians and entire cars!

fuel economy - sure wish they brought the td5 in to the states

weird steering (fixed on sII) i'm used to it now, took a while.

front sunroof too small -

small things, but a sII is most likely a very improved vehicle - still love my sI - but next car will most likely be a used 99 4.6 hse in a few years

need 4.6 motor as an option, a little underpowered, limited rear doors, not much unused "space"

- 2 hinges on the rear door, should have been 3.
- weak fan inside.
- long de-mist times as the vents under the windscreen do not stretch the full length of the glass.
- very few "hidey holes" in the rear. Regular equipment has to take up valuable space in the boot.
- poor sub-woofer in the rear door. Only works with stock stereo. (2 wires? How does it work anyway?)

+ Looks the dogs wotsits
+ Best 4x4 by far (could not resist)
+ It's a Land Rover
+ It's a good off-road tool from stock
+ I've got one!
+ It's not a J[spit]p
+ I GET 30 MPG FROM MY TDi !!!

-power antenna (should be just a flex one or like in the '97's+, built into glass)
-low windscreen is a pain at times (i'm 6'-3")
-when i hit things the dents do not go away like in the movie Christine
-very little leg room in the rear (but what do i care)
-not enough 'nice' rover folks in my town. :(
-leaks water like the Kurst at times
-headlight jets are placed to close to brushgard, therefore breaking off when bumping trees. now i can spray students with a heavy stream of washer fluid in any direction!!
-small wheel wells (hard to add larger tires w/out lift)
-lack of an optional 'bumper dumper' as seen here: www.bumperdumper.com

i feel really bad typing these things. my truck is within site and it can see me typing this. i feel so dirty.

but if it did not have these little quirks what would i do every weekend and not owning one would be like........well we won't ever go there. :)

#10-I don't have one, yet!
#9-Will I park the 108,675 miles 94RangeRover and devote myself the the DiscoI
#8-Every-Freaking body in this part of the U.S.(MD,NOVA,DC) has one, and they are too content with leaving it stock.
#7-the high schoolers are even starting to purchase them(dang, they must be rich, millionaires or something).
#6-If I get it, will I become more of a fanactic then I already am?
#5- Will I get fired from my job only because the higher ups will become extremely chatty about me owning "2 expensive vehicles".
#4- How much explaining will I have to do for the benifit of my wife and daughter as to why they didn't get any goodies today, tommorrow, or any other special day, becuase the Rovers had special needs...
#3- When we(the crew, not the family) travel out of town, how can be humble enough to actually admit that the only reason I am towing the other one is because I want them both(the Rovers) to enjoy the wheeling trips. You know if I came home and one of the two couldn't attend, I am sure there will be some FUSSY days ahead.
#2- With all the other Discos in the metro area, I will have to attach one of those waving hands to the rear glass, side glass incl. alpines, and windshield.
#1-Getting everyones home address here at Discoweb.org so that I can come by to show off my new "Discovery"., now that would be an expedition exchange.....

94 Rover, drive a little further south in MD and you will be the only one driving a Rangie. I think there are two Discos in my county, except for the interlopers on weekend trips here (one or two more, max), and one of them is mine. The other one is brand new, too, and in the same damned color. :( Nonetheless, I never see Rangies and if I ever saw a Defender I might drive right off the road. Get outta town my friend!

Karen :)

Hey Karen, there are approx. 3 people down in your area with Defenders 94-96 two of the guys that own them cruise with me from time to time(1 in Clinton MD the others way out past Waldorf and the other way out past Ft. Washington, blah, blah, blah(way-way-way-out to me) about 5 to 6 Range Rover owners down that way(My buddy who Fred drives a 92 RR, Tom has a 90RR, and Don has an almost twin of my 94SWB, he just kept it stock and yep, countless Discos..whats your 20? Maybe you are futher out than I am aware of, but if you see them, you'll see them....You'll most likely see more of them now that you are wheelin' in one yourself...My morning commute only allows me about two RR's, but on a good morning I'm lucky to spot atleast 5.

94Rover, those guys are all over Kyle's way. I'm across the river, next to the Bay but not across the Bay Bridge. If you think Waldorf is off the beaten path, they have to pump sunshine to us down here, LOL! If you can believe this, the first time we saw the twin Disco to ours down here, we were driving ours home from the dealership the first night! ARRRRRG! We see a few Rangies come through here, but they usually have VA plates, so are weekenders visiting their boats. The last Defender I saw was in the Caribbean, but then again, I don't get out much.

Oh yeah I forgot one:
Short windshield. I sometimes have to bend my head sideways to look at the traffic light. I heard that this was only a problem with D1s.

Minus,

Air conditioning offers carpet cleaning services when in use. Anybody else get this option with their disco? The option of drenched carpets every time the AC is used?

1.0 Wheel wells too small.
2.0 Wish it had factory lockers.
3.0 Factory skid plates, too.
4.0 Needs another hinge on rear door.
5.0 Hard to see traffic lights.
6.0 Lucas Electronics.
7.0 Air intake faces forward, right behind headlights.
8.0 My right knee hurts when I drive it very far.
9.0 Leaks at alpine windows. (fixed)
10.0 Peeling dash. (fixed)

It's a good sign that I had to think for a while just to come up with this small list!

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of pageLink to this message   By Leslie N. Bright (Leslie) on Monday, September 03, 2001 - 05:10 pm: Edit

1) The short windshield (in jolly ol' England, all of the lights are on short posts beside the road, so the problem of seeing overhead lights was completely un-thought-of (and cured on the DII))

2) The 'itty-bitty' oil leak (it really doesn't bother me, but it freaks out everyone else when I visit their house and it marks its turf)

3a) Overpriced parts at the dealer (but I buy everything from everywhere else anyway)

3b) Lack of a dealer w/in a reasonable radius (rumored to be on the way next year) (not really THAT much of an issue since I wrench on it myself, and source my parts elsewhere, but it'd still be nice to have one for the harder-to-find parts)

4) Not being able to adequately defrost the windows while having the air pointing at me, too

5) Lack of limited-slip diffs stock (yeah, lockers are better, but I wouldn't expect THAT in a car off of a dealer lot... but most other vehicles have limited diffs, at least)

6) Clock-bulb that burns out too quickly (and I'll throw the shift-console bulbs in here, too)

7) Killer depreciation

8) The rear cargo cover end pops off the hooks and rolls up (I use a binder clip on the end to keep the cover from popping up)

9) Rear passenger door rattles (it's beyond the adjustment capabilities of the door-post to take out the slack) (think an extra hinge on the back-door would be a good thing, too)

10) Fuel-efficiency (but was expected)

11) The sucky front-cup-holder that won't hold any big cups, nor will stay in by itself (I use a penny as a wedge when I shut it to hold it closed)

12) Small wheelwells make it hard to get taller tires on it w/o trimming the body (though minor)

That's the ones that come to mind. I'm sure I could sit and nit-pick and come up with more, but... hey, nothing's perfect, and I can live with the problems because it offers SO many positives...

FYI for 'Series I Disco': the lid of the center cubby has two cup-holders built into it, so that you can flip it open and let the back-seat passengers use it...

So far, my only pet peave on the discoII is the cupholders. I would not mind installing the additional ones that screw into the sides of the console but they look kind of funky and then they would be permanent?!
