Anyone have the new BFG Mud Terrain T/A KM's. Ordered them a couple days ago and just wondering how they are, and how they compare to the older ones.

Anybody got info on these?

Groovey! (Literally)
They rock. I can't compare them with the older non-km version, but the seem very aggressive and hae great sidewall for ruts. Did pretty well offroad, but on road its a bit noisy, nothing too much.

Looks like BFG's attempt at keeping up with GY MT/R's...

Yes. I though that the new tires would be siped as well. I'm kinda glad I went with the Goodyear MT/Rs now. I wonder how durable the new BFG MTs will be.
Thanks,
Mike B.

What does siping do to the tire?

Siping is good for a Mud-Terrain tire. When you sipe a tire, you put small slits or cuts into the tread. This improves traction greatly in all conditions because you would have more bitting edges. It also improves braking and tire wear. The cost is usually around $10 for each tire. Your local Discount Tire/Americas Tire Co can do it for you.

The main reason a MT is so poor on ice or hard pack snow is the lack of edges. The edges are the grip for surfaces like that. Take a look at a snow tire and you'll see edges everywhere. Those slits are called sipes.
Some retail tire suppliers have machines that can selectively sipe parts of a tires tread. Some people will sipe the big interior lugs on MT's to improve traction on very slick surfaces. While this is good for ice, IMO, it drastically reduces the life of the MT when used off road. The siping can and will cause the siped lugs to chunk.
Once again, one must carefully balance the aftermarket hardware with it's intended use...
