I just purchased a 96 Disc....dealer is putting brakes/pads/rotors - how long does this job normally take? they told me they have to remove the rear end to do this?? one mechanic has been working on it for two days.....is this a big job??

Rover brakes are extremely easy. The rotors are a different story.
I did the brakes on each wheel in less than 1/2 hour. It was actually pretty fun! My rotors were in good shape, so I got lucky.
From what I have been told, the rotors in the rear require that you remove the axles (half shafts). I haven't done that yet, but my friend tells me it's no big deal with the right tools. The front end is a bit more involved, but since I haven't done it either, I can't tell you why. Sorry, not much help here...
Is this a Land Rover shop? If not, i'll bet they were in for a huge surprise when they pulled off the wheels! LOL
Thanks,
Mike B.

I live in MA - the dealer that sold me the Land Rover is having his mechanic work on it....hopefully it will be ready tomorrow! From all I have learned its not such a big job - I am wondering if it was getting the parts that held it up - I have since learned that the land rover is not difficult to service, and to replace a disk, he has to dissamble the hub and repack the bearings.....this may be why its taking so long.....either that or this mechanic has never worked on one before .....yikes!!
thanks guys!!

Jill: there are several good independent shops in Mass, and certain dealers have sought to replace rotors with no justification or need.
I'm still on my original rears after 100k miles.
So the question is why?

Haven't done the back rotors, but my front rotors were scored pretty bad (waited a bit too long to order pads, my bad), so I changed them out myself. Not hard... Took about an hour for the first one, not knowing what I was doing. 2nd one took about 30 minutes, just diddling along not in a hurry.
Pulling axles on a Rover? NOT a big deal. I would think that the rears shouldn't be a big deal, either. IMHO, YMMV.

Leslie,
You are right pulling brakes and rotors on a Disco is very easy and most any person with any mechanical experience can do it. People should definitely take Leslie's lead here steer clear of the Land Rover dealer.

ok everyone - here is the story - I picked up the rover today - they did the brakes, pads....drove her one hour home - rode like a dream on the highway....life is good!! they had put gas in it - tonight went out and it has a light knocking noise - my hubby says they must have put reg gas in it....i had half a tank in it - so i then filled it with the premium....so is the knocking from the gas....it says so in the book.....i am no mechanic guys.....so what do you think....please advise!!

Jill,
Start a new thread with a different title maybe "engine knocking noise". that does not sound right to me. Sure you are supposed to put higher octane gas in but if you don't it should not "knock" Did it stop after the premium gas or perhaps if a gas additive was added?
