While driving my Disco II in urban Texarkana last week, I heard a thump in the engine compartment then a screaming sound that I think is attributable to the belt. On examination, the housing around the belt has a large (3") hole in it that was not there before. I am not much of a mechanic, and can't see anything wrong with the belt, but every morning it makes a very loud belt-like noise when I start the truck, especially if the A/C is on.
Is this serious? Should I just replace the belt? WHat about the plastic belt housing?

Could be your belt tensioner or a/c compressor or your alternator, water pump Sounds as if one of them has a bad bearing.

there is a recall on one of the ldler pulley's all that is left of your driverside idler pulley is the bearing the plastic part that broke off is what made the hole in the plastic cover.

I just took a look, and the tensioner under the broken housing is all metal and smaller in width than the belt; if the tensioner is supposed to have some sort of plastic around it, that's it!
Thank you!
