The tech page titled "Reset Service Engine Light" tells you to poke a hole in the sticker with a long rod, but it doesn't say what to do after you poke the hole. One would presume that you should push a button to reset the computer, but the page should be more clear. I tried this process this weekend. I poked the hole and felt around for a button, but didn't think I felt one so I took the box apart to further investigate, and THERE IS NO BUTTON. Nothing at all to be pushed, pulled, or otherwise. What's up.

you need to poke through the sticker and make an electrical connection between two pins...not push a button. you also have to be careful not to break pins. you're right, it should be clearer.

No - engine off...and from what I remember, that box & the internals were pretty fragile. I'd put it back together, replace it, and start engine. If light is still on, I'd repeat procedure and just try delicately make the connection. I used a steel hole punch with a conical point - I inserted it into the hole (through the sticker) until the sides of the conical point touched the pins and made the connection. Worked like a charm. If you can't get the light off, I wonder if you pins are intact...? I had the luxury of explicit instructions form a helpful guy via email. If you can't get it to work, I'll see if I can dig up the printed email and send the info to you.

I don't think that this is my problem, cause sometimes the light is on, and sometimes it doesn't come on. I think it is emissions. I will get the whits at Land Rover to diagnose it for a generous $80. Any tips on do it your self diagnostics?

Wait a minute, are you talking about the yellow "Check Engine" light, or the red "Service Engine" light? The "Service Engine" light can be reset as described in the tech section document, the Check Engine light needs to be reset using a scan tool (Since your 97 has OBD II)

Where can I get this "scan tool"? do I have to go to the dealer.

I'm not sure if this helps, but I just bought the Autologic system for Rover. This is the aftermarket equivalent to the dealer's Testbook system used for diagnosing various systems and turning off warning lights. I am located just outside of Baltimore.
Now, I did just drop 15k on this system, so it does need to pay for itself, but I promise to be fair to the Discoweb people!
