Sounds like a bad sender, bad wiring or a stuck float in the main tank. If the same gauge reads ok on the aux tanks, it doesn't sound like a problem with the gauge itself.

if the car is not driven routinely the diesels can develop 'swamp thing syndrome' - an algea type goo that forms in tank mucking up the sender and anthing else it can attatch itself to. when you pull the sender - check for growths - if visible you'll have to remove all tanks and have them flushed or it will return ruining your new sender
