Is there one that really stands out as the best? (Loadsa mud, hills, trails, etc).
I am talking about the official LR videos in the dealerships.
Thanks,
Dean

Transcanada 92. Best video ever.
Probably not find it at the dealer though.
Any CT from 87 or earlier is good.
Malaysian Challenge videos are preemo too.

Best video? DiscoWeb's Moab 2001 video, of course.... (And yeah, I am biased, because I am in it....)
Preview here: http://www.discoweb.org/video/moab2001tr1.rm
An 81 minute VHS tape will be released in a few days, stay tuned.....

Anyone have the backstory on why LR and Camel (Trophy) called it quits? Seems to be something that is ubiquitous with the marquee - why did they let it go?

Great question about the videos! I checked the LR gear site and they have a very few videos there. I had no clue where to start. Wanted to get some old Camel Trophy tapes. Does anyone know a source for those?

I don't know about the best CT video, but the Mongolia '97 (I think that's the year)CT video was totally stupid. Save your money! It has about 2 minutes of interesting off-road stuff but the rest of it involves biking/kayaking (with equipment they bought from K-mart), and a number of sweet, condesending 'savy westerners meeting the stupid locals' segments. And it seemed like the participants had never driven off-road before this "race". What a joke.
Are the others this lame?
And why did LR get out of the CT? Because why the heck would anyone want the name of a cancer-stick company plastered on their vehicle?
By Steve (Steve2) on Thursday, September 06, 2001 - 07:09 am: Edit |
actually camel trophy is a line of adventure clothing and boots. no relation to camel cigarettes. camel trophy split from l/r as they wanted to get involved in boat racing. the last year of the ct was 98. supposedly there was to be a 99 with honda crv's but i never heard or saw anything of this.

But the 'Camel Trophy' Brands company IS owned by RJ Reynolds.... it IS advertising, the same way that Winston Cup racing in NASCAR is....
The '98 CT was a no-go, but the 2000 CT did use CRVs.... and that was the last I heard.... wonder why....

By Nathan Hindman (Nathanh) on Thursday, September 06, 2001 - 07:19 am: Edit |
Officially, the LR/CT split was mutual. The way I heard it is that CT felt the LR marquee was overshadowing that of CT, while LR felt that the recent (97/98) change in focus of the Camel Trophy no longer represented the core market for Land Rover.
And as to why there was no CT in 99. IIRC, the press statement said something along the lines of "since Tierra del Fuego had given them enough 'photo stock' for the next 2 years of marketing" it wasn't necessary. Just goes to show you that WBI just didn't "get it" the last few years of CT.
BTW- I did like the CT'96 video. Lot's of mud and winching across Kalimantan (southern Borneo).

96 and earlier good. better as you get older. late 80s are the best.

from what i've watched...
87 madagascar with range rovers was nice.
96 kalimantan with discos was also nice, but too heavy on the interview with the participants. nice music and all, but not much action.
92 Guyana kinda lame,
93 saba-malasya also lame,
non camel - la ruta maya... both lame.
rovers across america... super lame... lotsa talking...
the main reason i like 87 madagascar is that it's the most "no talk, all action" type tape.
all the rest is too heavy in the other "fluff"

Good God! Has anyone checked on the 2000 Camel Trophy Honda CRV team? Some of them could still be alive!
A friend bought me an Eco-Challenge video series last year...I was psyched to see a CT Disco in it, but they just used it as a cool-looking platform to stand on for the pre-race lecture. Lame, lame, lame. The older CTs with all the action are where it's at.
By Kyle Van Tassel (Kyle) on Thursday, September 06, 2001 - 03:02 pm: Edit |
Ron is absolutely right here. I dont think there was much at all in the 90s worth watching. The older stuff was pretty good as far as action gos but dont break the bank on them. You might be dissapointed..

What's funny, I don't have a single Rover video, but someplace I have a (pretty bad, really fuzzy) copy of the 1978 Star Wars Holiday Special...
Hmmm.....

Blue,
If they chose to try a CT in a CRV, consider it natural selection and let them be removed from the gene pool.....

By Blue Gill (Bluegill) on Friday, September 07, 2001 - 05:53 am: Edit |
I am in complete agreement. Charlie D knew his stuff, and his theories apply everywhere.
Is your copy of the Star Wars holiday special in Betamax format? I still have a bunch of Beta tapes lying around...I really don't know why...
By Leslie N. Bright (Leslie) on Friday, September 07, 2001 - 06:29 am: Edit |
No, it's a dub of a dub of a dub... on VHS. Really bad, but if you're drunk and bored it makes a good laugh. I wouldn't mind having a clean copy of it, but I've heard that George would literally whack any copies w/ a hammer if he gets his hands on them. Hope he isn't listenin... Oh wait, who's at the door? It's a squad of stormtr....WhzzzzHH BaroooMMM!!!!
I think I've got a box somewhere w/ some beta tapes and a player, but who knows for sure where....
Funny thing was, Charlie mostly just reasoned out much of it, same way James Hutton did... it's just common sense applied to what you see.... (guess we're preachin' to the choir, eh?)
-L
By Blue Gill (Bluegill) on Friday, September 07, 2001 - 07:45 am: Edit |
yeah, common sense is a relative term
I spent Wednesday in San Diego at a convention with a Sr Geologist from my firm. He's a very intelligent & religious guy. He seems to be hell-bent against evolutionary theory. Unfortunately, I didn't have time to probe his reasoning against evolution or learn his personal theories of earth history (I'd suppose its the biblical standard "God made it all in 6 days about 6,000 years ago"). I've never understood how extensive geological knowledge can be overridden by religion...
By Andy Nix (Andy) on Friday, September 07, 2001 - 07:48 am: Edit |
There are alot of things we don't need in order to sustain our lives, but we have them anyway.
6 days to God is 6,000 years (1 day is 1,000 years)

Wow, how we change subjects.....
I am not 'religious' in the common use of the word, meaning that I don't run around trying to cram my theology down anyone's throat. But I am in the sense that I DO have a very strong belief in my chosen theology.
I am very comfortable with the concept of taking the first chapter of Genesis as an allegorical tale. Having said that, it then becomes surprisingly accurate once you remove the time-constraints.
First, creation of the planet. Then water developed. Life begins in the seas. Planst come forth onto land. Animals do, too. Lastly, man comes about. Darwin and the Bible can cooperate, IMHO.
Just read an article about use of the word 'theory', AAMOF. Really pointed out that common use of the word 'theory' is actually a 'hypothesis' in science. Theory is almost to the level of fact, just shy of 'law'. Most of Darwin's ideas are well on the way to be interpreted as laws, yet because we choose to refer to them as 'Theory' people think that it means that we're not sold on it ourselves.
AiYYEEEEEE!!!!!!!!
This isn't Disco-related, guess I should drop it... Email me about if ya wish, and we can continue this chat!!

Leslie,
'If you remove time constraints'
Huh? How can you ignore a million-fold differential between 6000 years, and 5 billion years for the age of the earth? And what about all the conclusive proof that the earth really IS that old?
Soory, but these 'details' are always overlooked by everyone I've ever had this argument with.
Dean
Now, what was the link to LRs again?

How's that? (G)

By Blue Gill (Bluegill) on Friday, September 07, 2001 - 11:32 am: Edit |
very good, Karen
I've had many a long, weighty discussion on this issue...it's especially fun to have with mormons, jehova's witnesses, and any other religious peddler who comes to your door (they never seem to come back a second time to my house...). I just feel that I know too much to believe everything I read in a storybook.
Religion is a personal issue, probably best left at that...
By gil on Friday, September 07, 2001 - 11:43 am: Edit |
religion is an easy answer for those who do not wish to answer the question themselves...
By Blue Gill (Bluegill) on Friday, September 07, 2001 - 12:28 pm: Edit |
Gil, man, you're getting pretty deep...have you started your weekend early?
By Leslie N. Bright (Leslie) on Friday, September 07, 2001 - 06:05 pm: Edit |
Dean,
You misunderstood me....
Remember, I am a geologist....
Remove the '6-day' time constraint.... not what you see from the geologic evidence.
Trust me, I firmly believe that this chunk of spinning rock (upon which we are blessed with the ability to drive our Land Rover Discoveries!) has been doing it's thing for about 4.65 billion years now!
Karen,
'She' is as good as 'He', IMHO.... either one is human limitation imposed by us on what we cannot comprehend.
Blue,
Many times have I killed a Saturday when those fellas on their bikes in the white shirts and black ties came riding by.... never mean to (well, sometimes), but quite often get into a 'discussion', albeit baited.... guess I shouldn't do it, but they open themselves up to it...
I have spent hours with Buddhists, Jews, Satanists, Baptists, Agnostics, Atheists, Mormons, (all of which should drive Land Rovers!) bouncing through all of their ideas. The trick to being able to successfully 'discuss' any of it is to put aside your own convictions from the emotional standpoint and discuss it from more of a third-person point-of-view. IMHO, YMMV.
Gil,
It can be. But, that can be an albatross of its own... What I find to be MUCH more satisfying is to question it all myself, and follow through until I find an answer. Usually only more questions come about, but eventually you will get to the point that you start to develop your own framework.
I think Blue said it VERY well... it IS a personal thing, and should be. If it's not, then it's just superficial, and not genuine.
Hope I haven't offended anyone, none was meant.
I'd gladly take this elsewhere if anyone wants to continue such... maybe even in the 'practice area', maybe... or better, maybe, drop it from here altogether and continue by email or on another board elsewhere... just a thought....

talk about change of subject indeed...
you all fucking posting here all day.
perhaps we should get some chat room action here somewhere?
By DiscoWeb Team (Admin) on Saturday, September 08, 2001 - 06:44 am: Edit |
This is the General section, if you want to discuss religion or philosophy or whatever in this area, that's fine. General topics does not have to be Land Rover related.

Ho,
Didn't mean to offend yesterday... it was slow at work, and then things got left hanging so I tried to tidy up last night.... unfortunately I can be long-winded at times.

no problem at all leslie.
no offense.
i was just pointing out the fact that perhaps we could use a chat room for this kind of stuff...
By Leslie N. Bright (Leslie) on Monday, September 10, 2001 - 02:18 am: Edit |
Good points y'all....
Ya know, I've 'never' used a chat room, really...
I'm always checking a BBS here and there, then get up and go DO something, then can check the BBS later.... kinda like emails versus phone-calls, you can respond when you can, instead of having to be doing it at the same time as anyone else.
