HOW DO THE STOCK 4X4 XPC TIRES HANDLE SNOW AND ICE?
                           THANKS.

I'd go for specific winter tyres.

I've been running XPCs for a year, and they handle very well in all conditions on road - except in winter. They may be good in snow (I don't feel so, but for Michelin its their snow tyre), but on slimy roads they're a killer. On icy roads, cold wet roads etc they perform very bad.

To illustrate my point: I took the Ford Focus up in the mountains to go skiing last winter...it was all time low explaining everybody why the brave Discovery were back home...

Not bad but had other tires handle better in snow on other 4x4's.
Ice unless you run studs or chains I had no tire perform well.
If you need to relpace your tires I would not go with stock XPC's

NFG - I got stuck in snow, mud, sand, rocks etc etc - couldn't even get up my own driveway when it was was wet & muddy (in suburbia!!)

Fitted some 245 75 BFG A/T's (KO) & they make a difference - a big difference!!

I reckon the Michy XPC's are a road tyre 90% 10 % off road - if that.

i didn't like my XPC's in the snow. and i do a good amount of driving to vermont and other states in the winter time for skiing. they were kinda 'squirly' at times and i was not happy with them. my new cooper discoverer s/t's are quieter and even ride better with a much more aggresive tread. and they are pre-drilled for studs for real winter driving.

If you have a lot of tread left on your XPC's, you may want to try siping them before you throw them out the windows. It has been my experience that siping makes a huge difference in snow and ice performance.

I have the stock XPC's on my Disco and they are terrible. I have BFG M/T's that are siped on the D90 and they are awesome !

Check on getting them siped at one of you tire shops. That should improve your traction.
If it still feels slick then buy a set of snow tires for the winter.
If it does work then you should have only spent about $40.00 instead of $500.
The siping will also increase your traction in the summer months and help your tires run cooler.

Good luck

How do those Nokian Hak-whatever-a tyres do in snow, since they're advertised as the best snow tyres available?

Oh, and for the XPC query, I've never had a whole lot of trouble with them on ice and packed snow, as long as I was going in a straight line

Nokian Haks are great. just don't run them on pavement for long times......like all all spring or fall. they will wear out quickly. use to run them on a second set of rims on my VW in Vermont and they were great. stud them and you will be unstopable. everyone else up there i knew was also running them. if you want a dedicated snow tire they are among the best.
