For about 2 weeks, my Check Engine light was ON following a problem with the connection of one of my plug wires. I've since corrected the problem.

Then, last week, it went OFF. My brother who was driving it, said it went OFF following after he filled up the gas tank.

Then, yesterday, he filled up the tank again, and the light came back ON again!

Any ideas?

I went ahead and ordered the OBD II diagnostic software, but in the meantime, if you've got some suggestions I'd really appreciate it.

Don't worry unless it flashes wait until you can pull the code with the software.

Cheers
Ron

I've been enjoying my intermittent Check Engine light for the past two weeks now. Try relieving the pressure in your gas tank by unscrewing the cap...seems to be a direct (or indirect) link there. Is there any connection, or am I imagining things? I haven't had the "gas tank filler tube recall" performed on my '96.

I know for fact that the "Check Engine" system does monitor your gas cap preasure, so there is a connection. The last time I checked the gas cap was as far from the engine as it could be. They should pack in more warning lights, and then warning lights to tell you that your warning lights arent working.

My Check Engine light has been coming on and off too. I looked and my engine is still there, so who knows? It's probably a problem similar to the rattling roofs!

I just purchased my 95 Discovery and it had a crack in the fuel tank "neck" where the filler tube connects and would leak when filling and if the tank was full. I did get a check engine light and got a code of 48 which has something to do with a "stepper motor" and was supposed to check the idle speed and something else. I fixed the crack with epoxy putty and disconnected the battery to reset the light and it hasn't come back on since (about 1 week). By the way, it gets about double the mileage now!

The Check Engine light just went off again yesterday. For no reason at all.

Can't wait for the OBD scanner to arrive -- it will probably say, "Code 666 - Lucas General Fault"

Thanks, Scott...my check engine light just came ON again yesterday. Take it back.

It's probably your O2 sensor. I had the same symptoms, took a gamble on the o2 sensor and once replaced, light stayed off.

Kingfish, that's what I'm thinking, too - probably the O2 sensors.

The Check Engine ghost has been around for a while, but yes, I had a hell of a weekend. Saturday fixed the damn drippy power steering mess, then went wheeling Sunday with a Disco II, a wrangler with 5" lift & 33s, and a cherokee with 9" lift & 35s. I followed that 9" lifted SOB everywhere. People were mucho impressed with my little white whale...:) Roto was sacrificed, but I can't believe it made it this long in the AZ desert. It's front-wheel drive time until I get it replaced. I'll post some pics of the weekend insanity...

It's coming ON any second now. Of course, when the OBD scanner arrives it will go OFF again.

If we live near each other we could try trading the OBD scanner back and forth. Eventually we should have both of our lights ON and the OBD scanner broken.

I'm counting on it.

I've had my ON, I've had mine OFF. But have you had yours DIM or FLICKERING yet?

Just troubleshooting with the Lucas repair manual. I have the sacrificial chicken waiting.

Ooooh, no dim & flicker for me. I heard that flashing Check Engine light is bad sign (you are literally supposed to get out and check the engine, because it's probably on fire). Yes, with a concerted effort, I'm sure we can get both lights to stay ON, while your scanner is broken at the same time. That would be true Lucas perfection. :)
