... on a '95 Disc. 5-speed at 52,400 mi.

I see the faq on how to turn it off, but what does it mean? I see in the owners manual I'm supposed to take this into the dealer and pay them some money to service the emmissions system -- would rather solve this problem myself, if possible.

thanks,

Norm

You answered your own question: it's built-in to trigger at 52k so that you'll take it to the dealer for emmissions service. It'd be something to the effect of changing the oxygen sensors, checking the condition of the cat, etc....

It gives the dealer a chance to once-over your truck now that it's out of service to see what needs to be done, now that they can charge you for it instead of it being under warranty.

(Note: I suppose I should say 'unscrupulous dealer'; there are some out there who are good guys....)

So this dire-looking, emergency red SERVICE ENGINE warning has no connection to any actual fault in the motor, much less the emissions system?

Driving down the highway at 80 mph, this light comes on suddenly -- I'm thinking the motor is probably in a meltdown, so I immediately pull off the freeway in heavy traffic -- lucky I didn't get smacked by a semi.

Don't you just love LRNA? I mean, if they're going to give you some meaningless warning and scare the crap out of you in heavy traffic, why don't they just do it at scheduled service intervals like 45K or 60K? Or, better yet, why not just add the bogus emissions check to one of these service intervals and leave off the ^^&^***^ warning light entirely? BASTARDS!!!!

We need to find a good class action ambulance chaser and sue the crap out of LRNA!!!!!

Mine came on at about 106k. It looks big and scary but means ABSOLUTELY NOTHING. Reset it and go about your merry way.

I read somewhere that the switch box (red in color) is located on the passenger side under the glove box or in the footwell area. Once you find the switch, you have to peel or poke a hole through the small oval LandRover label found on the top of the switch and then insert a plastic toothpick (?) to reset it.

Sorry I can't be more specific.

I agree, LRNA should not have been allowed to trigger such messages and all of us should file complaints.

I looked and looked in my passenger side kick panel on my 95 Disco and could not find the "Emission Maintenance Reminder" box like I read about. I then looked under the passenger front seat and there it was, plain as day next to the diagnostic box. I actually opened mine up and inside under that hole was just 2 metal pins that apparantly need to be shorted together to reset it. No buttons in there on mine. So a plastic toothpick wouldn't do anything on mine. You'd need a small metal screwdriver or awl.
