Axle

How do I turn this into a front D60 open knuckle axle for a rover? I just found another one so I want F/R salisburys (thats what it is) but I don't want the rover cv crap on the front.

Looks like the pumpkin is centered. You will need to re-tube it, get new axles and figure out the abs sensors/disc/caliper mounting. I doing the same thing now.

I have a d-60 in the rear, before I spend 300.00 on ring & pinions and 500.00 on winppy axles!

Pumpkin is in the normal LR spot (Its the rear out of a 110) adn about the same width as the regular rover axle.

Robert,

If you want a D60 rear why not get a salisbury and give it the D60 35 spline upgrade? A salisbury is a D60 (actually better as the carrier is 4 pin) the only thing that sucks are the axle shafts. I am planning on the same stuff but I am trying to keep it all rover (5 stud big lug pattern) and as many LR parts as possible.

Here is another shot

Oh and the Detroit Locker (gearless as it is 4 pin carrier) is only $300. Of course that means you are limited to 24 spline shafts.

I would think there would be a problem with the larger axles(35spline) fitting through the salisbury stub axle/splindles(whatever they are called) So you would still need to change the ends of a salisbury to D60 or D70(?) to fit the 35 spline axles. this would of course mean you would have to modify the brakes or use different brakes. Question is can you modify the D60 hubs to fit the LR bolt pattern?(8 on 6.5 vs 5 on 605mm?) Or would you even want to?

Well Ron,

Other than the cool factor, why do you want front and rear D60's? Do you really wheel your LR that hard? Anyway, as Robert said you will have to retube it. Just swap the sides. Now it should look like a front D60. The other thing to do would be to find some 24 or 30 spline shafts, spindles, and open knuckles for a D60. Just customize for the big 5 bolt pattern. That should do it. Lasty, if you want 35 spline shafts you had better bore out the tubes. They won't fit without doing it. Also, with this size you could put in a spool and save some money over a DT. Good luck.

This better work

Yes you have to bore out to go to 35s, just as you would have to with a 30 spline D60.

Zane I have to admit it is mainly the cool factor and knowing I will never ever break a front axle but as I explain to people with my project I am starting with esentially a blank piece of paper so I want to do it right. I dislike spools. DL is fine in front I dunno as they don't make a TT.

My main problem is fitting the 5x6.5" hubs on D60s or fitting open knuckle u joints on a salisbury. If you can figure that out then it is easy (relatively).

Cheers

As for getting the correct bolt pattern onto the axles you could get them customized. It shouldn't cost anymore than a standard customized shaft. Call Dynatrac and ask them. They may also have a solution for your knuckle problem. Oh, the number is 714/596-4461. Hope this helps some.

Ron,

Drop a line to dynatrac. they can make you a setup that will keep the 5x6.5" bolt pattern and manufacture the front shafts and u-joints for full time 4wd. they also manufacture the axles assm. as well. www.dynatrac.com

It is not possible to bore out the land rover spindles to fit larger than 30 spline axles. Some believe that even 30 spline is pushing the safety factor.

i am going to keep the dana/chevy wheel bolt pattern to get a better wheel selection.

Bill @ GBR says fine boring out salisbury (not rover) to 35 spline. So drew that means front and rear. Rear will be a pain to fine unless you have one custom retubed. i am sure dynatrac can make me what I want but if there is a DIY solution here I would much prefer that as I don't want to spend that kinda $$$ on a dynatrac axle.
