I hope I never have to find out the hard way, but how water tight are the Discoverys? I don't have a crazy idea to go cross a river creek or a mud pit any time soon, but if I ever lose my sanity and I want to, what should I do to prevent water from entering the cab?

If you stop moving while in the water, you start leaking like crazy. By the time someone was able to hook up a tow strap, we had six inches of water running through the inside. You can see the water line above the pocket in this shot:
http://www.gotmud.org/pb01/SPB16.jpg

Al H. took on even more water in the same amout of time since he was deeper on another trip:

Key is to not stop if possible. Do what I do, keep a set of chest waders in the truck and when you get to unknown crossing, send the wife across. If you extra nice, hook her up to a tow strap in case she finds the real deep holes.

Chris

lol

did you have a carpet before the water -- because after the water crossing, my guess it was too moldy and smelly to keep.

i guess short of taping the doors shut, water is gonna get in.

My observation is that there is a 1/8" to 1/4" gap on the bottom side of black tube seal around the door opening on each door on Disco I and II. are you seeing the same thing?

I have been trying to figure out how to close up the gap. have you guys ever heard of anyone has done anything to resolve this problem?

I just got my 95 Discovery and it leaked when I went through the car wash. I imagine mine wouldn't keep much out in a river.

FJ - I lucked out with the carpet. It was clean water going in and not the typical black, toxic, stinky mud you usally find in the Barrens. The weather was good that day and the following week so we just took the mats out and left the windows open all week after using a shop vac to try and get as much left over water out.

Shane - My '99 SD does the same thing if i hit it right with the pressure washer or garden hose.

I have seen a write up somewhere of someone who used door molding foan tape strips to help seal the doors but I would assume that nothing will really make you truely watertight.

Put duct tape over the gaps. This will slow down the water flow but not stop it. I am removing the rubber gasget and rplacing it with new weather stipping that I got from Dicount Auto.I wiil continue it up the side and have the the replacement rubber against the origial. Remove the old gasget with a razor blade then clean the plastic door molding with alchohol before putting on the new weather stripping. When I get done I will try to post some pictures.

Hey Rico, whats the part number on the weather stripping you got from Discount Auto. If you could post some steps how its done. I have to change all my OEM rubber strips sooner.

Butchs
Sorry it took so long to get back.
The brand is Super-stik Weatherstrip.
01080
Height: .600 in
Width: .725 in
Length: 10 ft.

Pep Boys also has a weatherstip that would work, but I don't know the part #.

Good Luck
Rico

Rico,

Is the new weather strip better than original one?
I guess it can reduce the outside noise as well if that's the case.
You know it's so loud inside while cruising the highway in Disco...

We used some PVC Black silicone between the gasket splits. Ran all day in and out of deep water and she was dry while everyone else's carpets were seeping.
I will replace my gaskets soon as Rico is doing, but until then, this was the trick to keep us water-tight.

in my disco, you can throw a pencil through the slot between the rear doors' weatherstripping and rear wheelwell. waterproof? when we go out for a long drive, my kids ask me for something to stuff between the rear seat cushion and doors, so it doesn't blow chilly air so much. waterproof?

hehehe

needless to mention, dealer at first said that this is the way it was designed, then asked about 1500 for bodywork (no it was never whacked)

Bruce:

Man you rocked on Sunday. You were in pretty deep a couple times. Too bad you wussed on that last mud hole! Hehehe. I was ready to pull you out! When are you going to put in a snorkel?

Those TruTracs are nice! You went through everything without much problem. Next time we will have to find something a little more challenging for you!

Where did you get the PVC Black silocon and what kind of package did it come in? I've seen black silicon in a tube, but this looked different.

By the way, both Steve and I were bone dry inside with the duct tape, but the Silicon looked like it worked much better. I feel sorry for those D2 guys and that classic Range Rover. That Range Rover looked more like an aquarium than a Rover at one point.

Thanks,
Mike B.

Mike,
Let me address one issue at a time:
1) when I see water that is dead still in the middle yet the banks have strong current, call me a wuss because my Disco aint' goin in! You did not see what I did and I saw a dorsal fin from a humpback whale in that creek!
2) The stuff is PVC gasket silicone sealer.
3) You were dry becuase you stayed to the sides all day long dude. Mark and I laughed-up a storm since you have a lift and taller tires. You are killing me man.
4)Man I love those Truetracs! Mark was warning me all day long about getting too cocky, but hey, I think I ideled through almost everything Sunday. He said you were reconsidering leaving your stock diffs, what gives? Remember that first little lake and the hill to escape? You were spinning like mad trying to exit. $1500 and you will be unstopable too.
See Ya.

You can do what you want with the seals. it will still come rushing in. Its coming through the door , not around it. There are small drain holes at the bottom of the doors. The water comes in them and out of the door panel on the inside. Right around the seal.. :)

Jinwoo,
The weather strip looks just as good as the original. The first time I used it I just replaced the bottom of the door sill because it was ripping up on the drivers side. I was going to get the new weather strip from LR but then I found out that it was all one piece with the trim and it cost $117.00. I did a little math and went with the Discount Auto stuff.

Good Luck
Rico

Bruce:

Hmmm. I was not talking about the deep water that you turned around on. They as a very good move on your part. I was talking about the mud puddle at the very end of the ride. That was the muddy challenge that you were looking for all day! I can't believe that you passed on it. I know those woods and that mud hole was not as deep as it looked, but it has a really muddy bottom. To get through, you would have needed all 4 wheels spinning and need a good bit of momentum to carry you through. Oh well, maybe next time.

I did spin a little coming out of the mud hole because I goosed it too much (on purpose). When I stopped, my wheels grabbed and I came right out.

As Trail Leader, it my responsibility to make sure that everyone has a good time, not just me. We had three rookies with us who have never seen anything like the conditions that we had on Sunday (really deep water everywhere). So, yes, I stayed on the side a good portion of the day. I tried hard to find the best line for evryone in the group. There were several times that I had to beat a hasty retreat when the water got to the mid-point on my door. Even if I could make it through, some of the others would not. I feel terrible for Shawn and the family Range Rover. They took on a lot of water when they got stuck. That thing looked like an aquarium inside.

I am really glad about all of the modifications that you are doing. When you get done, you will have an absolutely fantastic setup. I'd really like to see you get a CB and take more of a leadership role when we go out. You definately have the vehicle for it. That way I can focus more attention on the rookies to insure they have a good time. Also, we would have to stop less to make sure the rookies get through the tougher spots!

Thanks,
Mike B.
