MT or AT?

That depends. Generally, AT's are better for snow because they have more bitting edges from siping. The Dunlop Radial Rover RT is a mud-terrain that is good in snow. So is the BFG Trac-edge, Super Swamper Trxus, Big O Big Foot XT.

The R/T and the Trac-Edges seem to be the middle-ground between AT and MT... they're about like an AT on the road, but a lot better than an AT off-road. They're not as luggy as a true mud-tire, but a LOT more bite than the AT tires. And they're much more civil on the road than the MT tires would be.

Haven't had my R/Ts in the snow yet, just got 'em Friday.... but I'm eager for snow to show up so I can see....

I agree. TracEdges are the best middle ground -- the only downside is the 2-ply sidewall (as opposed to 3-ply on the BFG MTs or ATs).

I have the R/Ts and love their overall performance. They grip quite well in snow/slush and in non "clayish" type mud. They also handle the rigor of rock crawling as I haven't lost any lugs. Although some lugs are missing chunks here and there but overall this is a tough tire. they're a commercial truck tire with a load range E and are ready for studs. I saw a few LRs in Portland with studded R/Ts last year.

Trac Edges are great AT tires that do well in snow, rain, and ice--if studded. They also provide great traction in dirt, but they are no mud tire. I have noticed considerable damage to the outer lugs on the rear tires caused by the small amount of hard rock they have crossed. These are pretty soft tires that wear quickly.

I've run trac-edges as my street tire for a while now, and was impressed by their snow ability. They can be studded if needed. (Although carrying a full set of chains just can't be beat for serious snow work.) They are a much better tire than ATs off-road. I've done some off-road stuff with them and generally been very happy. I can't speak to their durability on the rocks and real nasty stuff, because I usually have my other set on. The 2 ply sidewall is a bummer on the t/e if you wanted to work them super hard on rocks, etc.
